Yes the government was smaller before but this rosy colored vision of the past that people were free to do what they wanted doesn’t match the facts.

For one for the first 89 years of the country a significant portion of the population was held in slavery and both the Federal and state governments played a large role in that. Even after the 14th amendment many Americans, the Native ones, were driven off their land and locked up simply for being who they were.

At the same time many couldn’t do what they wanted with others because things like Sodomy and miscegenation laws were widespread. At the same time racism was widespread so doing business with those of different races was blocked by local
Practice with governments either too weak to stop that or outrightly supporting that discrimination.

This is why historically we’ve been far closer to the Libertarian vision of governance. It wasn’t good for many Americans as the government did play a very large role in people’s lives for the negative or was unable to do things to improve people’s lives such as addressing discrimination.

That's why we should have a government that treats all Americans the way it treated white men in the late 18th and early 19th century.

That reinforces the argument that far from
Your description of the government then as being less intrusive than it is now. Your statement is that it was very intrusive to non white men.

Even then it still didn’t allow white men the freedom to marry who they wanted if they were gay or wished to marry someone outside of their race.

Besides that where the government wasn’t intrusive still didn’t mean things were better. As noted a weak government allowed for state and local discrimination. It was only with Federal intervention that we started to see major action regarding discrimination. The irony of your statement about that government should treat everyone like they did white men in the 19th C is that it was ok massive government interference to make sure non white men has those same rights.

The government was very intrusive to non-white (especially black) people in the 18th and early 19th century, yes. Slavery was bad. The genocide of the native Americans was bad. Duh. Very simple changes. Don't allow the government (federal, state, and local) to discriminate based on race and gender. Who is fighting to allow the government to take race and gender into account now? The point is to keep the government out of people's lives for the most part.

You could also say the same about their Social Security too. I mean how many people have been paying into SS and Medicare their entire lives, but people like Stupid M want THE GOVERNMENT to step in and deny them their right to access their money when its their time to collect?

Sounds like Government overreach to me.

Taking care of the poor and elderly should be on the forefront of things to resolve for libertarians. That's pretty much the debt breaking Big Government entitlement spending right there.

We all know it, but neither party wanna Git Riddy o GranGran with Meddycare Death Panels!:eek::(

Do-nothing China pretended this problem didn't exist because they assumed their kids will take care of the parents. I think they now fine people for dumping granny into a ditch or something.

If libertarians can't address that, it'll continue to live in pure idealistic fantasy land

Interesting that the country is headed in the wrong direction, all I see is

    - Covid recovery
    - stock markets rising and Biden's economic policy successfully prevented a recession (despite how many republicans wish for a recession)
    - inflation is getting under control
    - relative peace

All thanks to Biden. He is going to win reelection especially if he is facing Trump again. Voters will remember that he rigged the Supreme Court which stripped abortion rights, didn't you see what happened during the mid-terms? Republicans are going to underperform, again.

    You wrote:
From what you just wrote that would undercut that as you are acknowledging that it was only a minority of the US that actually had what you described. Only white men.

Even just accepting just white men as noted they were still restricted who they could marry or even what type of consensual
    Sex they could have.

The historical fact is it took the action of an activist federal government to spread many of those freedoms you describe to non white men.

I think you have me confused with someone else, I have never opposed contraceptives. One of the few legitimate purposes of government is to prevent one person from harming another. That's why murder is a crime everywhere. Abortion is just a sometimes legal way of killing another person.
Yes, and I made a clarifying post. No, I am not in favor of reinstitution slavery or Jim Crow laws. Honestly, I didn't think that was something that needed to explicitly be pointed out, but here we are and I have now done it multiple times.
I would take the government out of marriage and consensual sex entirely.
Actually it took several constitutional amendments. Ultimately, it was pretty obvious what I was talking about and you chose to nitpick. That's fine. I stand by my original point that the problem is a too intrusive government and the solution is a drastic reduction in government.

I don’t want to say Biden for sure will win again as a lot can happen between now and November 2024. Even though polling shows trouble for Biden there are many trend lines tht look good for him too.

I don’t think you support Jim Crow or slavery but I think your original post about how the US was better in the past because it regulated and taxed less ignored that history. For the majority of Americans they weren’t freer than they are now.
And that’s fine but they wasn’t what was happening back in the 19th C when government had less regulation. I’m they regard they had more regulation.

Except you’re forgetting it took federal troops to desegregate. It took an activist government passing the civil rights act and federal law enforcement to remove many segregationist and racist barriers such as redlining.

It's easy to have Utopia for white men when you have a massive slave force working without wages. I wonder how much money in unpaid wages it all actually totals up to.
