Was Lloyd that bad of a defender? I was young back in the Lloyd days but I remember being decent on defense. Maybe I'm mixing his D up with Robert Reid's
He guarded Magic in '86 along with Wiggins iirc and bothered him enough to keep him from taking over the series. Once those two left Magic went wild on the Rockets. I could be wrong though, it was a long time ago.
Not gonna judge them for their off the court antics... Sweet Lou was more consistant offensive player than Max and Cat but he couldn't D up like Max or Cat. I gave the edge to Max cause he could light it up from anywhere or course he could brick it up to...
Just going to post this. Lew checked Magic for long stretches in that series and didn't stop him but slowed him down. Definitely a better defender than he gets credit for, but that wasn't the end of the floor where he exerted himself. Lew was probably my favorite player Rocket during his glory years just because he was a guard and so was I. Hard to identify with Akeem when you're 5'9", 150 as a teenager! Lloyd was a one-man fast break and was pretty much money either 1-1 or 1-2 on the break with that snap the ball back behind his head running floater. I copied that shot to no end in high school! Quick story. Elmer Bennett started calling me "Lew Lloyd" in high school when he saw me lamely attempt Lew's signature move. Years later, I went to a Bullets/Rockets game in DC while Elmer had a cup of coffee with the Rockets. I made my way down as far as I could during the pregame and called him over. I mentioned my name, high school, etc and he looked at me confused until I finally said, "I had that Lew Lloyd jumper." He smiled broadly and remembered me at that point. Mad Max may have been the better overall player, but Lew's an all-time favorite for me.
and that translates to nothing on the court, except awesome memories, one fan in portland getting jacked and a championship for the rockets. people only know Max through the news media and that someone makes them the vatican of the nba. no one knows anything much of anyone until it goes up on the news. Elliot Spitzer, OJ Simpson. Max got arrested for having a gram of pot in his car. Max had a gun. Max had domestic problems. I'm sorry that Max isn't perfect. I've got news for you too, Dream wasn't perfect, Rudy T wasn't perfect either. how about Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson? Kobe? why is Max worse than them? No teenager accused Max of rape, Max didn't pay off a mistress, and Max didn't get HIV. MAXWELL FOREVER!!
Wow Elmer Bennet now that's a name that I haven't heard in awhile. I used to play pick up games with and against him at Pershing Middle School.
I actually met one of his sons a while ago. It wasn't that he wasn't perfect; it's that he abandoned his children. I can forgive a guy for throwing someone through a window. And I can forgive a guy for abandoning his children. But that doesn't mean I EVER want him on my team.
I was sorely disappointed when Lew was kicked out more than when Max left. When Max left it was good riddance in a way becasue he left the Rox hanging at playoff time. But the highs(and lows) were better with Max. And, although Lew was just high, Max was high on himself to a huge fault.
oh i just wanted the hard-working players and show that we could prollie outwork every team in the history of teh L with that lineup haha
he was, but the moment he came into the L, he had superstar potential written all over him. i doubt scola or landry has that.
I voted for Lew Lloyd. I remember when that dude, while he was still playing for the Rockets, ran up a huge bill at Stouffers Hotel and couldnt pay it. Lew's problem was that entorage that followed him everywhere.
