Because the government wastes tax dollars catering to immigrants in their own languages. I was in a Social Security office a few months ago, and there was a giant poster telling people who don't speak English to point to the language that they did speak so that the clerk could get a translator on the phone. Why should I have to pay for that?

One of the clerks did more of her transactions in Spanish than she did in English.

when you keep saying- WE speak english, WE cater to their population, WE dont have an official language

I get that you are implying WE= American

so whats your definition of an American? whose been here the longest? the language you speak? skin color? a blue passport?

here comes a cliche--but thats whats so great about america its made up of different faces and backgrounds...

    Man!

Some people on this board would lose their minds if they lived in New York City! There are over 180 nationalities living in the 5 boroughs. I hear at least four or five different languages every morning just on my subway ride to work. My newspaper stand has newspapers in at least 15 different languages. I love it! And people here don’t seem to have a problem co-existing.

So what happens in say 25-50 years if a majority of the voters in the USA speak Spanish and they vote to make Spanish the official language?

I have no problem with people speaking a different language. My girlfriend is a Swedish citizen and speaks Swedish daily. There is nothing at all wrong with keeping with your culture. The problem is when people refuse to learn english so that we (Americans) have to waste time and money. Its ridiculous. If you want to be here, learn the language, otherwise don't b**** that you can't function.

If we get to that point, it'll be moot... we'll all be speaking Spanglish.

Batman, I'm terribly sorry that Bob Gammage lost the Democratic primary to Chris Bell. And it's equally sad that you continue to cry about it. However, if you are unable to figure out how to get over it, then we will just have to discuss Bob Dylan instead of politics. Thanks.

We could be witnessing the birth of a new language right now. Modern English is nothing like it's ancient counterpart which sounded more like German. Modern English has many influences already from Latin languages, mainly French. American English is already moving away from sounding like the Queens English.

So the problem is that we have to spend a few cents to print things in another language? That would have to be among the very lowest of concerns of things the U.S. govt. spends its money on.

It costs cents or in some cases fractions of pennies to print things up in another language. I hardly see that as a big deal, and may or may not even be connected to illegal immigration, since plenty of people here legally don't speak the language either.

Really? We can only discuss politics if we agree? That's weird.

I've said it before Tex, but I am really not nearly as broken up over Gammage being out of the race than Kinky still being in it. I didn't even know who Gammage was before the election. I just favored him because I thought he was the only decent candidate. He's gone. Fine. That's spilt milk. But Kinky's still running and still advocating what I regard to be an unconscionable position on immigration. I'm going to keep saying so and I'm going to keep saying so most particularly to posters here who support him (I do the same with Bush supporters and so do you). And yeah, forgive me, but I'm going to say it even louder to the smart progressives that support him -- especially when they don't even agree with his positions. Sorry. I hold you to a higher standard. Live with it.

You can say anything you want to, Batman. My support for Kinky has more to do with one issue. It has to do with the fact that he is the only true outsider/independent in the Governor's race, and also it has to do with the fact that he is a friend of mine. Live with it.

I don't begrudge you voting for your friend. The outsider stuff is kind of dumb in my opinion (David Duke ran as an outsider too, so being an outsider is not in itself a necessarily good thing), but whatever. It's just impossible for me to hold my tongue when I see someone arguing passionately against draconian positions on immigration on the one hand and supporting the candidate that best represents those exact same positions on the other. I'm sorry that offends you, but I really do care about this issue (as you do) and I'm going to keep denouncing people like Kinky Friedman until they lose or go away. Even though I've been addressing my criticism of Kinky largely to you, for the reasons explained in my last post, it's not personal.

Furthermore, if you don't believe the Texas governor has the power to make significant change in the state, why would you even care who won? And if you believe the governor does have that power, how can you support a candidate whose position on just about the biggest issue facing the state in the coming years is diametrically opposed to yours? I guess I'd have a lot less of a problem with it if I felt like you were working as hard to change his position on this issue as you are to getting him elected.

For starters, he wants to build a wall on the border.

Where would they put a wall on the Rio Grande River? In the middle of the river? What about the lakes on the river? Are they going to block of the shoreline of those two lakes? What about the river itself, won't the wall block the view of the river? What about in Big Bend State Park, are we going to have a wall running through the park? Or is it going to be an invisible wall? Maybe will just put landmines along the entire border? How about we electrify the Rio Grande?

    Dear Mr. President,

please eliminate the rules against plagiarism so that i can pass whatever i want off as my own writing, even if it clearly comes from somewhere else.

You guys are being stupid about the copyright thing. People here post articles/emails/crap ALL THE TIME. I received the same thing in an email yesterday and I wasn't about to go look to see if it was copyrighted. I don't agree with most of what Aces puts on the board but give him a break. He posted something that he saw. He wasn't saying that he came up with it. Stop being such morons about it.
