Babin/Peek will play DE on passing downs. They will probably come in at RDE and Mario slides to LDE. Winston will have to win his spot. Its natural for him to start on bottom of depth chart, but I expect Wade gets cut June 2.
Actually, I think on passing downs the coaches said MW and AW will slide to DT and Peek and Babin will play at the DEs.
I just know Brady Quinn is the early choice for the top pick. nfldraftscout.com has the top 5 players at each position, but they may just be the seniors as AP wasn't listed at RB and I cannot believe he isn't one of the top five in the nation. Darius Walker at ND has also looks good. Good quickness with suprising strength and power for his size.
I would think they would leave MW on the left end, move AW inside one slot on the right side, and stack Babin at the DE slot and Peek at the LB spot on the right 5 wide. That way you've got Orr and MW on one side and Weaver and Smith/Johnson with the push up the middle and Babin and Peek bringing it from the other side. Then alternately bring Orr on the speed rush or possibly bring the SS up the middle for the sack.
That could work as long as they let Peek rush from the LB position. I am pretty sure that they want Peek at DE though. They were saying onthe radio the other day that he had put on quite abit of size. I really think this move (taking MW) helps our D ALOT. It give us alot of flexibility on the line and should help generate a much better pass rush - which in turn should be a great help to out weak secondary - hope fully they can add a FS at some point. I know NO has talked about trading Dwight Smith. I would think he would have to be an upgrade to what we have now.
I think I read a quote by Kubiak or Richard Smith somewhere where he said they were NOT planning on moving Peek back to LB, since they felt his ability lay mainly in rushing the QB. Coupled with a 610 report yesterday that they are planning on moving Weaver inside to DT now, and I'm guessing they have plans for the starting DEs to be Peek and Super Mario. Not sure where that leaves Babin...probably riding the bench.
When I re-upped my season tickets, the guy I spoke with knows people on the inside and he said that Peek will be starting at DE.
I have heard the same things. I think Babin will end up being a good DE, but this is just a gut feeling. I feel bad for this guy - Casserly gives up tooo much to get him, which causes the fans to be a little harsh. I wouldn't be suprised to see Peek, MW, AW, and Babin as our D-line in 3rd down and obvious pass situations. The other thing I liked about Babin is he is a good tackler. I remember in the first game of his rookie year he took LT down in the open field - not an easy thing to do. He has good size and speed, maybe he ends up a LB if the Dlne gets too crowded when all is said and done. Plus, every good defense needs at least one tattooed crazy looking dude.
I do agree that Peek will be perhaps starting, but how will he hold up against the run? In the past he was horrible.
Our whole defense was horrible cause we were in a 3-4 now we are running a 4-3 which all of them are used to .... now we will see who can reallly play
I don't think Peek will do too well against the run, but Mario and him will make a great duo for a pass rush. The defense will have to come together to protect Peek on run plays until he improves this part of his game. I have to say I hold out hope for Babin since I think he could develop into a good RDE that can rush and hold up at point of attack on run plays. The Texans, if they keep him, may line up Payne next to Peek. Payne would help negate some of Peek's weakness. Swilkins, I think you're right. That was my first thought when the Texans drafted Mario, but words in the media suggested otherwise. It sounds like Peek will end up being the favorite to start at DE from what I'm hearing now in clips here and there.
