You benefit from it when they do though. Education is a classic public good - yet you feel the need to free ride off of it. You are an enemy of efficiently functioning markets.

Can you tell me what clause of the Constitution compulsory education violates?

You are being silly. That is enjoyable. I will now laugh. College education is a public good. Don't expect me to pay for everyone's college education too. Or should college be "free" and compulsory too?

    I did specify caring people...

There are far too many irresponsible parents for me to feel confident that they will teach their children everything they need to know to be successful. Surely, many more children will be 'left behind'. But, maybe, the overall level of american students will increase.

Until a better alternative comes along, I'll take the tradeoff of our nation's students being dumber overall for all children having a fair chance. But...i care.

"Education" through threat of force, jail etc is forced servitude. Article XIII of the Constitution abolishes involuntary servitude anywhere in the United States.

Uh, unless you don't pay any taxes, and don't watch any college sports, you in fact do help pay for college education.

There is a reason many of our public schools resemble prisons.

By that logic, we also cannot have a military draft or jury pools. Heck, we'll pretty much have to abolish all vestiges of parental authority as well.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I'm still lost on how people think there is/should be a seperation of school and state. I don't see what is wrong with government being involved in schools. One of my best friends went to a private school where they took Spanish from a teacher that didn't speak Spanish. They didn't have textbooks. I skipped school twice to go visit his. They didn't do one academic thing all day. They got diplomas just the same as mine, except with higher GPAs while I was sitting in AP & Honors classes. Taking the public part out of schools doesn't neccessarily do any good.

Individual and community homeschooling is vastly superior to compulsory government homogenizing and brainwashing, which goes on at the majority of public schools. Believe it or not, the root of this problem stems from the breaking up of the American household, due to the Federal Reserve/government systematically lowering the avg. American family's wealth over the past century.

This forces both parents to work, thereby reducing the influence of the family and local community on its children, and instead relying upon government mandates. It's getting worse now too, as the average child is way, way dumber than 20 years ago.

Your friends school was most likely the exception to the rule. We have a terrible school system here in the US. I do not think that privatizing the school system is at all the solution.

When my wife and I have a child, it will without a doubt be home schooled.

There is no rule for either. I find private and public schools to have huge flaws. As much as people complain about public shools, mine must have been an amazing exception. I thought my school system was great. The teachers I had were among the brightest people I've ever met. It is one reason I want to raise my kids in the same area I grew up. Business Week named my city, Warner Robins, the number one location in Georgia for raising a family.

I think private schools in rural areas, like the one my friend went to(Twiggs Academy), are probably worse than most public schools. I certainly don't blame you for homeschooling your children, but mine will be in Public School. I do plan to teach my kids things beyond what they learn in school. I always want them to be a step ahead. I worry about developing social skills, making new friends, and not getting extracurricular activities if they were homeschooled.

If you really research homeschooling, you will see that homeschooled kids have more of an opportunity to do all of the things you worry about than kids in school. It's like anything else though, it is what you make of it.

Of course their are people who can do it, but vast majority of parents are not equiped to teach their kids up through high school.
