To all those posters who keep mentioning Shaq... I grew up watching 90s basketball (I miss those days) and that included the Shaq and Penny show in Orlando. Believe me, Shaq was never treated the way Ming is by the refs. Not even close. This despite the fact that Shaq was way more physical in his game.

A more valid comparison for Yao would be Patrick Ewing, and again, not even close when it came to the refs. Ewing even had his patented 3 step finger-roll across the lane, which Yao undoubtedly would have been called for traveling after 1.5 steps.

Granted, Shaq is way quicker when making his move, and the fact that the game is a lot more pussified these days (and there are way more floppers)...

Even accounting for all that, you would have to be blind to not see that there is something fishy with the way Yao Ming is treated by the refs when compared to other players. So even if we disagree as to the reason why, it should be clear that Yao is not being ref'ed fairly.

    NBA戏弄中国人
    黑哨玩死姚明

I suggest this slogan. "NBA fool Chinese. Unjust Refs torture Yao." Select IE language simplified Chinese you will see this slogan.

I think Yao gets a raw deal on calls from refs but I am having a hard time considering this racism.

There have now been 4 Chinese players in the NBA all who have been forwards or centers and played in the post. I think if someone can prove a pattern where Yao, Yi, Wang and Mongke were officiated terribly you might have a case but I don't recall any argument that Wang or Mongke were officiated poorly when they were the only two Chinese NBA players.

I am a Chinese American and know quite a bit about the railroad workers and I don't agree at all with making a sign comparing Yao's treatment to that of the 19th C. railroad workers. I agree Yao gets some bad calls. I don't know if it is racism or not but I do know that getting some bad calls as an NBA player paid millions of dollars is no way comparable to what the railroad workers went through. Frankly it cheapens the actual human tragedy that happened to thousands of Chinese who worked practically as slaves to build the transcontinental railroad.

It would take some balls but yes someone should do that, I would applaud you seriously. The unfair treatment is definetly race related when it comes to Yao, they mainly take advantage of the fact he is good natured because of his culture and heritage.

This thread is interesting. Personally, I don't raise bad judge to a race issue. But Easy got a point. I don't mind if the fans use racism as a tool to fight back.

You kind of answered your own question! If Yao were a scrub, we wouldn't even have this discussion because nobody cares.

Yao on the hand, if given a fair shake by the NBA can dominate this game, that is why we are talking about the mistreatments of Yao and trying to get to the bottom of this.

FYI, the NBA is not exactly run by geniuses you know, if you look real closely, you can see all of their warts ,molds and mildews, if it wasn't for Yao, I'd probably stop watching and devote more of my time to my music.

That is saying a lot considering I've been watching the NBA since the early 70s.

Americans dislike the race subject because they know that's something actually could hurt them if not handling carefully. Then again, whether we use the race card or not, it's debatable...

It's interesting about Shaq's comments on the "500 guys rule"..

Weren't we in the same situation before Abraham Lincoln? I don't know the ratio at the time, maybe not 500 to 2 like the NBA, but maybe 20 white vs 1 black?.. So, why are we celebrating Martin Luther King's day now?...

Move that to political discussion and create a thread.

I think Rockets fans should be more active when it comes to cheering and supporting on the games, especially people in the first rows.

They act like they came to see a freaking opera not a basketball game...

But that makes less even less sense if they are treating Yao badly because of racism. Why let your biases affect your decisions when you are dealing with a cash cow.

If the NBA is racist we should see that the other Chinese players also got terrible calls against them since they aren't stars and the refs are less likely to guard against their biases. As everyone knows the NBA is biased in favor of stars in terms of calls. It doesn't make sense to claim that the league is racist by saying a star is treated badly when the scrubs aren't if anything stars get more preferential treatment than scrubs.

Just to follow another point. If the league is racist towards Chinese shouldn't those of us concerned about it be looking to see if all the Chinese players have been affected by this?

Is this issue about racism towards Chinese as a whole or just Yao getting bad calls as an individual player?
