Best case scenario: Steve Young Worst case scenario: Rob Johnson I like him, I think he'll fall somewhere in between, but closer to Young, he's my sleeper QB on Fantasy Football this season.
consistency is what he needs to work on. everyone who backs him talks about that third season. but you look at season 3 and carr started off like gang busters and he just fell off. you can't blame that on the offensive line. so there it is, you saw the potential in games like the comeback in K.C. or the almost comeback against minnesota and you have hope. but then you look at the way he fell off and you wonder who is the real David Carr?
rob johnson is who I keep thinking about. a guy who has all the talent, but you just don't see putting it together.
I guess we should get rid of Andre Johnson also? I mean, we've done nothing but lose since he came to the franchise. And I'm not sold on our protection being much better this year, they've added one new player and reshuffled the rest of our crap players. Hopefully that and the new system will be enough though or they'll get somebody in the draft.
And it's all been his fault. There have been no extenuating circumstances (starting on an expansion team, worst line in the league, horrible WR's, one dimensional offensive scheme) whatsoever. It's all on him.
That sort of reminds me about the Rob Johnson/Doug Flutie fiasco in Buffalo. Flutie, despite not looking the part, was a much more effective player in Buffalo for a time and most commentators, including former GM Tom Donahoe (hue?) who was commenting for some network at a time, said "what's to decide? Flutie's much better". Then he became GM of Buffalo and re-canted, seduced by the pro-tential of Johnson, who looked the part and had the pedigree, rather than too-short, Canadian refugee Flutie. The result is known, Johnson continued to be a bust and Flutie played up until, what, last year? Guys just cling to conventional wisdom sometimes when they get put into a spot of responsibility, sometimes to their detriment.
I'm kind of in this boat. I think that when you are running for your life and have literally NO ONE to throw the ball to, you aren't going to look very good. Brett Farve looked HORRIBLE last year with no receivers, no running game and a bad offensive line. I'm not saying Carr is Farve, but this is his year to put up or shut up. He should have all the tools available to him and a system that suits him better. We'll see.
Ditto. I could say that regarding just about any other of your Texans posts, as well. Next year will be pretty damn fun, can't wait.
(D) David Carr is a good person. It is a lot easier to root for him. To be fair, now (with Kubiak, Bush, Putsier [sp?], Moulds) is his best opportunity to shine and show what he is made of. So we shouid just write off the past 4 seasons and give him a fresh start - give him at least 2-3 years to settle into this new offense...any expectation lesser than 2 years to settle down will be disingenuous.
Thanks, dude! I think the offense will have a totally new look this year. Along with the new scheme (I've always loved the Denver offensive scheme since their Terrell Davis days) brought in by Kubiak, there will be a lot of new faces: RB- Bush (dynamic playmaker this team has always needed) FB- Cook(?) (fullback leads the way in Kubiak's offense, I hope he can block) WR- Moulds (finally a #2 WR who will take pressure off of AJ and Carr) TE- Putzier (pass catching TE who played for Kubiak last year, Carr loves throwing to the TE, remember Billy Miller?) C- Flannigan (offensive lineman typically have a longer shelf life than other postions, so I'm not too concerned about his age) Like I said, this is the year for Carr to silence his critics...or watch them multiply.
I think Carr hasn't had the tools to succeed and with the additions on offense in Moulds, Flannigan, moving McKinney to guard where he is better suited, the pending addition of Reggie Bush, acquiring a TE in Putzier that can actually catch and a head coach who has a history of being a QB coach should help Carr tremendously. That being said Carr has a lot of growing to do as a leader and a teammate. Before I get flamed for saying that I realize that he has been planted over 200 times and knocked down countless times in the backfield, but he has been one of his worst enemies in not getting rid of the ball when the situation called for it. I'm not the biggest Carr fan, but I have not been one of his biggest critics either, I'm a Texans fan and want my team to succeed. I've never wanted any players on the team to fail (except Matt Stevens) and if Kubiak and co. have faith in Carr then thats go enough for me. Go Texans!
This is what I don't understand, he has had FOUR years, how many years of consistent failure do you give a guy? Yes, he has had problems on the OL, but did he elevate his team? No? They guy can't even throw the ball to one of the most dominant receivers in the NFL....he locks onto one guy and if he is not open, he takes a sack. At least 1/2 the sacks are from Carr holding the ball too long.......he is just not a star QB, IMHO. DD
I'm a B/C guy with a lot of P...as in Pressure. Texans again AGAIN have #1 pick and there are two, perhaps even three 'franchise' QBs on the board. If one (gee, which one in particular???) succeeds and DC sucks then this will deposit Carr into the deepest abyss of sports history, in Houston or anywhere in the USA. It would really suck to be David Carr. Think he can avoid that rush and find his man?
