I think Brooks would be best used in the Bobby Jackson role. Calvin Murphy may have been a shooting guard but he could assist ... Murphy owns the Rockets record for assists. I agree with Easy ... you either have court vision or you don't.
he's a late first round pick who never played in his rookie year and is thrust into the starting lineup half way through his second season. if you're expecting a guy who can control tempo, know when to shoot and when to pass, and know how to defend the likes of tony parker, you are smoking something very strong. adjust your expectations of this kid.
Something to consider in the future. I don't want to make it a starting or not thread. IMO, the most need of our second unit is rebounding.
If you want to use second year as an excuse, fine. I just want to have a fair assessment of his game. But if you are expecting a lot of grow up in his play making, you most likely will be disappointed. Not many people can acquire that in NBA. It's not like shooting a jumper.
exactly what i've been thinking. i haven't seen calvin play that much, so i can't say. but from the stats alone, i doubt aaron will ever reach calvin's level. they don't make you a hof-er for nothing. bibby may be a better comparison. bibby can't shoot, but he can also dish some. and i concur... you either have the court vision, or you don't.
It's a great comparison. Aaron's faster than Calvin was, but not by much -- Calvin was pretty quick. Calvin was a better shooter than Aaron has been so far. The biggest difference I can see is in their builds; Calvin was thicker and VERY strong for his size. In fact, he was built more like Lowry than like Brooks. And don't forget: People were AFRAID of Calvin. He had a well-deserved reputation as someone you didn't want to mess with, and he'd start **** with guys a foot taller and a 100 pounds heavier -- and usually win. But they were both shooting guards in SMALL point guard's bodies. And if Aaron turns out to be half the player Calvin was, we'll be very lucky.
Don't compare Brooks to Calvin Murphy. They are both short guys who play basketball. That's the only similarities. Calvin Murphy was a scorer. Aaron Brooks is a streak shooter. Now I would love to see Brooks play like Calvin Murphy. Simply learning to pull up and shoot a mid-range jumper would make Brooks a much, much better player.
Lowry is so much better than Brooks at everything. Ok, maybe not at shooting 3s but even that is up for discussion these days. Lowry's ceiling is very high. Brooks' ceiling is playing SG for a few minutes a game while Lowry does the heavy lifting at PG.
Thats pretty good, but thats what adelman wants. He's not a pg type of coach. he probably feels his system is the pg. Once again, the rox arent going anywhere, so might as well develop the players. If adelman had to do it over agains, he probably wishes he would have given brooks jackson game time last year to further hs growth.
Brooks is a scorer, though he's not as consistent at it as we'd like. If you were paying attention to Aaron at the beginning of the season, he was pulling up and shooting that mid-range jumper. That's in his arsenal. For whatever reason, he's gone away from that.
Murphy holds the assist record because he's played nearly twice as many minutes as any other Rocket guard. His Ast% (percent of teammates baskets he assisted on) over his career is basically the same as Aaron's.
You can say he is cheated by his own speed. He believe he can get by players, but once he get by the first defender and face the rotating defense, he doesn't know what to do - good or not, he throws his shot anyway.
Thats what he needs to get back to durvasa. i guess some people thought or think the rox are doing something this year. I guess if getting out of the 1st rd is your goal, so be it. This is about playing and developing for next year. Lowry is a good player, but when he has a 0 asst game like he did the other night, then who will people cal for? Brooks has talent and some special qualities. Is he a true pg? No, but neither is parker, harris, or mo williams. that doesnt mean he cant be a effective guard on a winning team. rafer was a true pg, but couldnt shoot. People cried about him too. The same thought process of not developing players is the same thought process of why our lotto pick isnt on the team. The spurs have always been a step ahead of the rockets and have shown patience when they do get young players. Parker wasnt the parker we see now, but they stuck with him. The rockets need to do their part and develop players also.
I don't think fans are having super high expectation of a late first round pick. But the coach and management are selling this high hope how he is the bright future of this Rockets team. It's not Arron's fault he's thrown into the starting lineup. He does try. But are you saying it's fans' fault to expect starting PG of the No. 3 team in the Western conference to be starting quality? Or you are saying that the coach and management are really mailing in the season, and everyone is serving the grand goal to help the bright future PG to gain experience? As a fan, I won't be happy about that. As players, I don't think anyone except for AB will be happy about that either. I don't expect a Nash or CP, but I want a PG who's supposed to control the team, at least knows how to control himself first. Eric Snow is not a great PG, but he knows his strength and shortcomings. He's not a good 3 pointer shooter, so he gave up lots of open 3s, and stepped in for a closer 2. Does it occur to you when AB does NOT think of his own shot first, open or 1 on 5?
Well said. As I said elsewhere, starting or not isn't that important, but it matters more because Adelman ALWAYS let his starters finish out the game.
