"Country" isn't paying Yao big bucks. Country isn't the reason Yao has huge endorsement deals. It would barely register as a blip in the news if he was a CBA player that broke his foot. He wouldn't be the player he is today if not for NBA coaching and competition. His financial security is a result of being an NBA player.

And being in the best shape possible for the NBA season should be his main priority.

When China starts paying his salary they can get pissed off about him getting hurt while doing his JOB.

Damn straight! I'll tell why Yao's foot is broken: It was from the weight of carrying all the hopes and dreams of a county being placed solely on his shoulders. I know Yao's heart is still set on helping the CNT whenever possible, but let Yao have a breather. The guy needs some time to be a normal young man for once in his life.

The NBA season is the thing that wears him out. 82 games compared to how many for the CNT? And he was a Chinese citizen first so I understand his loyalty.

But I agree, he needs to limit his basketball schedule. Year round is too much for any player, muchless a 7'6" center.

The broken foot could be a good thing for him restwise, assuming it's not serious.

in all honesty, I said to my dad that they probably exxagerated the rehab time so Yao can have an excuse to take the summer off. My dad laughed and thought that was a great idea. he thinks Yao might have another problem next year. LOL

I don't see what the big deal is. Of course China's going to be skeptical. The World Championships don't mean anything to the Rockets, and it benefits them greatly if Yao is very conservative with his recovery so that he is completely healthy for the start of the nba season.

China will want Yao to come back sooner while the Rockets would likely prefer later. So it's up to Yao and his advisors to decide what's best for him, and what he ultimately wants. He's the one that holds most of the cards. Sure the rockets signs his checks, but if the NBA has shown us anything, it's that the players really run the asylum.

China wants Yao to play for the CNT and lead the team to international success. The Rockets want Yao to help win nba championships. Apparently Yao wants to do both. So I don't really see this as a China/Rockets tug-o-war, but actually Yao making a decision with people on either side of his ear.

BTW, "He's more vicious than a capitalist!" is an instant classic. But it's pretty obvious that the article is a translation from Chinese. And the previous Olympics with Yao showed that translating from Chinese is a tricky endeavor. There's just not that many translators out there that have a degree of idiomatic comfort with both languages, so a lot of things tend to get lost in the translation.

"He's more vicious than a capitalist!" is definitely a goofy sounding idiom. But you got to love it. Those bizarrely hilarious and/or poetically profound translations one of the best things about having a Babel-less world. :)

Haha I agree with you and your dad.

But about your sig, do you really want to give up that much for Stevie? I think NY wants to give him up for anything right now I'm sure. Swift and Alston ok, but not head. Maybe the 1st and Swift tops.

    Exactly.

The title of the article from Reuters actually is "China sweats over Yao Ming's foot", not "Chinese skeptical over Yao's injury" as posted in this thread.

I could not find any evidence from the article that the Chinese basketball officials believe Yao's injury is flake. There is only one sentence related to the reaction from a Chinese basketball official: "Perhaps the reports who covered the news had misheard, Hu Jia, deputy director of National Basketaball Management Center, suggested in a local newspaper".

Yao is the key player of the Chinese national team. One can imagine that when the Chinese heard the news, they would be shocked, anxious, and disappointed. Like many of us did, they would wish that the news was not true and hope that the media reported incorrectly.

Like us here, the Chinese fans would have different opinions to this incident, including blaming the coach. Everyone is entitled to express his or her opinions, and there is nothing wrong about that. Unfortunately, the writer only select a couple of extreme quotes, to sensationize the whole issue.

You ignore the fact that Chinese basketball recognized his talent early, paid for and provided his training. Without the CBA's intervention Yao would be like Sun Ming Ming. Yao owes them a great deal, and don't you Americans forget it. As I've said before, if you don't like me, then listen to Yao himself, and he regards his responsibility to the CNT as paramount. Read his autobiography and watch the documentary.

My guess: Yao will go back to China in July and he will play in the WC. He combines Wang and YI will make something happen this summer.

Reuters are cheating. No one in China now would ever say that. "Capitalist" is a very good and enviable title there now.The writer is living in his own imagination.

Don’t be fooled by Reuters. As a Chinese, I can testify that there are full of prayers on Chinese BBSs. There are irrational fans here and there, but they do not represent the majority. It is just that Western media always tend to be as negative as they can when reporting from China, in this case, singling out these extreme fans. We can’t change that attitude overnight, but I feel the need to let you know the truth.

I hope the oversea medias wont quote what fools like Aries_Tim says and then make it sound like it represents the general opinion here. Otherwise people in other parts of the world would think everyone on clutchfans.net here are morons like him.

At least I am not. :p

Reuters doesn't report anything wrong, just that some reader like to use their own imaginations.

cable, you are the best. you never failed to provide something insightful even when I didn't agree with you.. I would totally read an otherwise unattractive thread just because you were the last poster and wanted to see your comment. keep up the good work.

Aww, you're making me blush.

But I know what you mean. There are a number of posters who, if I saw them listed as the last post on a thread (even if I haven't been reading it), I'll go check out what they have to say. Some guys just come up with quality analysis or interesting perspectives time and again. I'd name some names, but I'd prefer to keep my man-crushes to myself. ;)

WTF? I know there's some JVG haters in China, just like clutchfans. But more vicious than a capitalist?

I don't know nowadays how many Chinese use this word”capitalist” seriously. I read the Chinese BBS everyday and haven't see anyone badmouth JVG "more vicious than a capitalist".

The god-damned vicious Reuters wants to involve everything in politics. As I know, most Chinese don't concern about politics.

    LET SPORTS BE SPORTS.
