The best starting five in the league!! All year long. If you look at it on a per-game/minute basis, it looks even better.

So, the reason the Suns and Mavericks have a better record is because of the combination of Yao missing 30+ games, and that they have deeper benches.

They need to let those 5 finish the games then........since we stink at closing team's out.

The interesting part of the 11-3 record since Yao came back is that it didn't even feel like 11-3. With all the moaning, whining and complaining on this board, it's hard to believe that we are actually almost 20 games above .500 while a lot of people seem to take this for granted.

It is good to be 20 games over .500, but due to our heavy early eastern conference schedule it is a bit of a "fools gold" scenario.

I would like to see them start to beat some good teams from the West, and losing to Utah at home was a big downer.

good point. you'd think rockets are falling out of the playoff race with all the hens with their feathers ruffled.

other than dallas and suns, the rockets have beat the good teams in the west.

It gets sadder by the day.

The season is nearly 90% complete. Our schedule weighting is virtually irrelevant at this point.

Never mind that we've had the 2nd toughest strength-of-schedule in the league to date.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

DD's words were incorrect, but the Rocket's starters have destroyed the East. These stats do not specifically show how the Rockets top 5 have fared against the top 5 of either Phoenix, Dallas, SA, Utah, LAL, or Denver.

It would be awesome if Lenovo would split out how a 5 man unit fared against another five man unit.

    basketballvalue.com tells you that.

You can see how each 5-man unit did against every other 5-man unit.

I calculated the following numbers used this information after the Bucks game:

    Entire season, all opponents
    Code:
    [B]players min off/48 def/48 net/48[/B]
    Yao,Tracy,Chuck 829 105.5 78.5 +27.0
    Yao,Tracy,Juwan 359 98.3 99.9 -1.6
    Yao,Tracy,Rafer,Shane,Chuck 761 106.1 75.6 +30.5
    Yao,Tracy,Rafer,Shane,Juwan 196 104.5 89.8 +14.7

Now, let's only look at the numbers against opposing 5-man lineups who are "above average" (+/- for the season >= 0).

Entire season, only opponents with +/- >= 0
    Code:
    [B]players min off/48 def/48 net/48[/B]
    Yao,Tracy,Chuck 430 93.6 89.4 +4.2
    Yao,Tracy,Juwan 251 90.2 104.0 -13.8
    Yao,Tracy,Rafer,Shane,Chuck 382 92.0 83.0 +9.1
    Yao,Tracy,Rafer,Shane,Juwan 153 98.5 95.4 +3.1

I think DaDakota actually has a point. This year we've done a great job at beating the teams we should beat, but not as good of a job at beating the teams we "shouldn't". We have a 5-11 record against teams with a better record than us and haven't made many big statement games (ie Utah, 3 straight losses to Dallas, getting blown out by Phoenix twice)

Durvasa, those stats indicate that Juwan is the primary culprit at least in making our Lenovo go down.

In particular, our record against all the playoff teams we'd meet in the Western Conference has been very poor. At the same time, consider that we haven't been fully healthy in most of those games. But I agree that it's troubling.

Can you break down the Lenovo stat by quarter. I'd like to see if it substantiates the theory that we can't finish games. In essence, a crunch-time Lenovo.

Lenovo doesn't provide any of that information. But you can get +/- info, broken down by quarter, by using the raw data provided at basketballvalue.com. It will just take a little while parsing it. You can also filter out periods in the game that are "blowouts". So, for a given stint (period between substitutions by either team), if the margin is m1 at the beginning, and m2 at the end, you can treat the +/- as:

    Code:
    if m1 < 10, x = -10
    else if m1 > 10, x = 10
    else x = m1

    if m2 < 10, y = -10
    else if m2 > 10, y = 10
    else y = m2

    t' = [ (y - x) / (m2 - m1) ] * t

    +/- /min = ( y - x ) / t'

I think that will give us a pretty good picture of things. Maybe later tonight I'll post it.

It would be interesting to have a lennova stat specific to the last 5-7 minutes of each game.

I think our starting 5 would probably be ranked one of the worse if there was such a stat.

I don't believe it! You have FINALLY after all these years given me a reason for algebra. I can understand the Rockets better if I understand algebra better. Dayumn! I didn't think I would EVER find a use for algebra....How about you posting cliff notes for us dummies. And thanks--Good stuff!
