But Conan always does that.. what types of jokes was he saying now? Were they actual shots at Leno personally now, and does he address the situation specifically in his shots at NBC? I can't stand the fact that NBC is catering to Leno aka Bret Favre like this, sucks for Conan.
How is this in any way Leno's fault? Should he roll over and say no I think you should keep Conan in that spot instead of giving me the spot I've wanted all along. Most of you are forgetting it is a business, and as with every other business, results are what matters. Leno dominated at 11:35 and Conan has been awful. Why would NBC not want Leno there and why would Leno not want to go back to that spot. If you don't like NBC's business decision, so be it, but many of you sound like you need to go get an extra absorbant tampon and deal with the realities of life.
Aren't you forgetting the part where Leno ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT before NBC gave the part to Conan?
Can't say I'm a fan of either of those guys but I don't mind them...so I couldn't care less who get what slot. With that said i want Fallon and Kimmel to be blown off the face of the earth. My goodness those guys were hideously bad!
I hope Conan stays on, keeps cashing his massive paychecks from NBC, and rails on them every single night until they fire him with all of his money.
Leno quit. Then when NBC filled the position with Conan, Leno decided he did not want to quit. If it was the spot Leno wanted all along, as you suggest, then all he had to do was not quit in the first place. Leno was not exactly the hottest thing going when he first took over for Carson. It takes time to learn that audience and develop a style that works for the 11:30pm ET audience. It is a vastly different audience from that at 12:30 ET. NBC took a PR hit when they screwed Letterman in 1992. Now, in the PR game, this is less of a bad situation, and more of a behavior pattern. This could seriously backfire. I would suggest that you appreciate the actual facts of how all this went down before recommending sanitary products to other posters.
Why exactly did Leno "retire" in the first place? I thought I remembered reading he was feeling some heat from NBC, like they wanted to go in a new direction and bring in Conan, like they felt it was his time...but maybe I'm wrong about that. And wouldn't it stand to reason that if Leno's numbers are really poor, which is affecting the local affiliate numbers...wouldn't that in turn affect Conan's numbers? Wouldn't Leno's bad ratings start a chain reaction for their late night programming? I don't know if this is really Leno's fault as it is NBC...they were stupid in thinking a Late Night show would work in primetime...hell they were stupid for canceling Southland for Leno's show. But at least Southland got second life.
who cares ... hes allowed to change his mind and it happens all the time. In no way is it his fault Conan completely flopped at 11:35. If Conan had good ratings, then Leno would not have a spot any more. If you want to be mad at someone be mad at NBC, but they are doing what was right for them. Its called a business.
facts appreciated ... recommendation still in effect I can understand people thinking NBC is making a bad decision and thats fine. But this hatred for Jay Leno by some people as if he did something completely evil is ridiculous. He has no obligation to assist Conan in any way
The thing is Leno initially did bad himself...I think he played second fiddle to Letterman for a good year and half to two years until that Hugh Grant interview....takes time to build an audience.
And I certainly understand this thinking and I think there is an argument for saying NBC is making a bad move. But its NBC's bad move not Jay Leno's.
Except that Leno screwed over Letterman back in the day...and now he is doing it to Conan. You should really see "The Late Shift." Letterman was Carson's heir apparent. Leno did some guest host spots for Carson and secured the replacement spot. Leno is no angel, and he plays it as dirty as anybody else in the biz.
And how exactly is Conan expected to succeed or have huge ratings when NBC creates a new show for Jay and airs it before him, essentially competing for his audience/guests/ratings?? You say if Conan had good ratings, then Leno would not have a spot any more makes absolutely no sense, because that is pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of what happened.
That, and he had Leno as a lead-in vs CBS's high rated shows. I'm sure Conan's numbers would be higher if NBC had one of their gazillion Law and Order shows act as a lead-in instead.
You are totally misinformed on the situation. Leno has been sucking hard at 10 pm. Local affiliates are complaining to NBC to get some better ratings at that hour, thus the move. It is Leno's poor ratings, not Conan's, that is precipitating this whole thing. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2010/01/why_nbc_pulled_the_plug_on_pri.html
How were Leno's ratings at 11:35 compared to Conan's? ... And there is your answer to why nbc is going with Leno ... I'm not misinformed at all
NBC is not in a position to let Conan gain an audience. The people comparing when Leno first started the Tonight Show are completely ignoring the circumstances. When Leno first started, Carson retired for good, if Carson suddenly decided to unretire, I am pretty sure NBC would have given him back his spot and kicked Leno to the curb. Who else was going to replace Leno at that time? They dealt with the poor ratings because they had to, and they could take it as NBC was in a much better position back then. Right now, Leno is still with the network, and NBC is in 4th place. The Tonight Show was NBC's one hit and now that Conan is hosting it's not anymore. It's a business decision and bottom line NBC sees that Leno is more popular than Conan and Letterman. Also, Conan's supposed strength(the young demographic) currently is split between him and Letterman, so his strength isn't even working out for him.
conveniently, I will miss him in his old spot just like I did in his old new spot, much like his old old spot. takes the pressure off. Far as I'm concerned, he's still more of a guest on Letterman's show to me than anything.
