Legality, I don't know, but it seems pretty inconvenient to not be able to speak English anywhere besides in a public school.

If it was students, I'd say probably not legal. But, employees? You pay them a salary so that you can tell them what to do. Of course, it's government, so the normal rules of rational thought do not apply.

^ Thank you, South Park.

Anyway, thanks for that eloquent answer, Nero. The point here I wanted to ask about was mostly employee-wise. I agree that a principal can do whatever they want and if it gets too hot, get out of the kitchen. No big deal there.

Should you let people know that it's unfair that the kitchen is hot, or would you let the kitchen burn?

I might think about asking the principal why the rule, and if the principal can write it down so we know it's official as a rule. She can only say no.

Its downright annoying when people speak a different language in front of you even if you share a common language with them. Why don't you or your friends just speak it amongst yourselves when others are not around? Even if you did that at school you wouldn't get in trouble for it...

That's the problem, I believe. Even if I am to speak during my break, my lunch time, which the state might not be paying me, I'm required to speak English... even about personal stuff. Why?

Man, it ain't fair that I can't chit chat about the last novela with my pals during my lunch hour. Tell me that's fair.

I'm still waiting for the REAL LAWYERS and PRE-LAW peeps to chime in... with real laws... not some half-*ss answers from a guy who misspells his own name... (above ;) )

Of course not. Are they trying to solve a work-related problem here, or just avoiding to speak to their manager directly? You gotta know what the context is. I don't care if they're talking about me. Why would their boss have a problem? Of course we will answer no. It's ANY language. For work-related stuff, it has to be ENGLISH.

No clue what your post is supposed to mean. If someone is to speak aloud in a room it should be understood by everyone. Otherwise, go to a private place to have a conversation.

^ I don't know how else I can explain this further... I've tried already, but... here it goes AGAIN:
Employees are doing that, yet they're told they CANNOT have a private conversation even in Spanish. Clear?

How would you get in trouble for having a private conversation if it were truly private? That is my point. I am not debating legality of the issue here.
