I just can't get over how "identical" the pose of Lebron on the magazine is to the pose of King Kong on that poster. When I saw that cover, my first thought was, "Hey that pose looks just like King Kong holding Fay Wray." That's the first thing everyone else sees, right?
I don't think its an important topic but i think she has a point. you guys can b**** about oversensitivity all you want but black athletes are made to look almost not human. that's the point she's making and this cover only promotes that stereotype. does it matter in the grand scheme of things, probably not. but what is the purpose. lebron is some raging animal on a baskeball court, he's one of the most skilled players in the history of the game. so before any of you respond to my post, just ask yourself, what is the point of the cover, because I surely don't know.
IMO the actual cover photo itself looks stupid. Any racial overtones aside, the scale is all messed up b/t both subjects and it's so obvious the image of Giselle has been superimposed on Lebron. The first time I saw this photo a few days ago in another thread the first thing I thought was "damn, our photoshop the pain/streak pics are more professional and better lookin than this crap."
So maybe they should have a shot of him with a flower in one hand a glass of lemonade in the other? I don't get the argument. Of course the point is to make him look like a beast. We think of that as good in athletic competition right? Physically unstoppable and capable of imposing your will on lesser opponents. I don't think it's a race issue as much as is it an athlete in general issue. If athletes are feeling discriminated against then maybe that is a thread unto its self.
maybe they should have just shot him in a nice suit like anyone else who would have been on vogue and not your stupid senario.
Except this is the type of imagery that people want their athletes to resemble right? Isn't "He's a beast" a compliment regarding an athlete?
oh wow, you heard it in the GARM, great argument. and the term beast could refer to anyone in that context. that just means dominant. and lastly, you're ignoring the angle of the out of control black beast running off with the white woman, a very negative stereotype that was a part of this country's early history
Except that isn't what's depicted on the cover. She's smiling and seems to be having a great time while she lays slightly in his arm. Doesn't appear to me that she's being run off with. If she appeared in distress in the image I'd buy your argument. And you are flat out lying if you say that it's not common to hear things like beast used to describe physically dominate players.
I admit I laughed at the comparison because it's starting something that has no business of going. I saw the cover before this and didn't think anything racial of it. We're only angry if the Asian chick is hot.
I said you're taking beast it out of context. someone could be an exceptional debater and refered to as beast. and exception golfpher. it doesn't mean they're an actual animal. her smiling may only add to the stereotype. that's neither here nor there
Lebron is a personality that racks up millions of endorsements and aspires to shadow Tiger Woods in income. I don't think his PR handlers have been grooming him to be this stereotypical 1800's white woman predator.
LeBron is really good at marketing himself. If he's going to get free advertising, he's going to advertise his clothing line and not Gucci or Armani. LeBron James hired his buddies to be his "PR handlers". LeBron is in charge of his own empire.
