Some of the big salaries are players who are in the back end of their contract right? Like how McGrady made 20+ in the last year of his contract.

People hate on Lebron because he intentionally antagonized a fanbase in a big way. MJ, Magic, and Bird may not have been modest or humble but they never directly pissed off their own fans.

Say what you will about Farve and Clemens toying with teams and fan bases but neither directly/intentionally pissed off a fan base quite like Lebron. It's just so stupid to bite the hand that feed you. Even Kobe's actions, while morally/ethically intolerable, really didn't have anything with directly attacking his fan base.

Because of his stunt, is it likely Lebron will likely not be all that popular post-retirement. You could do alot of things to lose my support as a fan (gamble, cheat on your wife, etc.) but really nothing would make me stop cheering for someone quicker than telling me you don't like your fans.

He took a paycut because NBA teams normally have 2 max salary players. And they get 3. He's worried the role players can't keep up with other teams.

By taking a paycut he's insecure, not unselfish. He figured he could easily get the 2M cut back if he won a champion.

People who hate him now hate him with the full on assumption that he'll be knee deep in championship rings after his stint with the SuperFriends. Why would him fulfilling those preconceived notions make them change their opinions?

kobe is making 10 million more than lebron and he wins championships so lebron definitely took a paycut stop trying to spin it any other way

Its similar to the Kobe situation, even though he was accused of something far worse people eventually moved on. The saying "winning cures all" holds up in most cases, I believe it will for Lebron as well. People tend to forgive and forget, why not this time?

I agree but for different reasons -- I think the cult of celebrity is fickle and it will move on very soon. Especially once "The King" has a couple of routine and boring post-game press conferences in the regular season. The spotlight will move back to skanky starlet with a drinking problem. (Lebron's beard is a good PR move because it makes it's the one thing that distinguishes him from that group.)

Charles Barkley went on the Dan LeBatard show yesterday and had a rather interesting interview.

    Some notes:

    - Charles thinks that LeBron is a good dude and the best player in the NBA.

    - He claimed that he has never criticized LeBron throughout those whole process (WTF?) except when he called The Decision and the celebration ceremony "silly." When pointed out that he called him a punk, he admitted that that shouldn't have used that word.

    - He said he disagreed with LeBron bringing race up in this, but then agreed with Dan that black players and white players are held to a different standard. He cited the outrage of Clemens vs. Bonds and veiled racism of callers on talk radio.

    - Charles says that as a black analyst he is often told that he is "outspoken" while white media members get to be as controversial as they want and get away with it.

    - He says that the only criticism he's heard of LeBron was the The Decision was a bad and crass idea (how about the legacy ruined, sidekick, shortcut, quitter, talk? Has Charles not heard any of that?).

    - He doesn't think that anybody would be angry about the Miami Heat if he had not done the one hour special.

race is an issue whether people like it or not. sure black athletes can be well-liked (b/c the NBA is predominantly black) if things are all great and dandy, but the tolerance for any bad press is very low. however, the tolerance for a white athlete is a little higher.

again, you have chad johnson and big ben committing the same bad act, chad johnson is going to get the brunt of the coverage. it is what it is.

but again, sports fans are extremely fickle. you play great and win, all the crap you do off the court doesn't really matter anymore.

I still don't believe LeBron actually believes all this garbage that comes out of his mouth. He is just a puppet and Maverick Carter and WWW are the ones calling all the shots.

If it were up to LeBron, he would just stay quiet, join the Heat w/o the Decision and peacefully go about his business.

The Kobe situation was entirely unrelated to winning or even sports. The hate people have for Lebron is entirely within the sporting world. When they hate him, part of it is stemmed from the fact that he took the easy way out. And that hate is felt with the full assumption that he will win, and he will win big. Winning in reality will actually strengthen those assumptions and preconceptions.

I completely agree, I didn't mean to imply that winning alone is essentially the cure to all his evils. I did state that people these days have shorter attention spans, they are willing to move on to the next thing, be it good or bad. Sort of the reason why people will eventually be back supporting him. The man will have some crazy stats on the team, because double and triple teaming him will be a riskier strategy for the opposing team.

While we are on the subject of Kobe, I still don't believe for a minute that he raped that woman.

He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Wasn't it concluded that she was just a ho that wanted money outta it?
