My wife's a private pilot... you can wear spectacles or contacts and you are not too old. You can usually rent a plane through your local Fixed Based Operator, file a flight plan, and take off. The flight plan is not an onerous thing, so don't let that psyche you out. Classes can be tough... (way too much math for me) and like anything dangerous, you really have to guard against becoming too pleased with yourself... take your time and even after you solo, there's no shame in going up with instructors to hone the skills and the mental approach. And always be honest with yourself about the kind of planes your skillset will allow you to fly safely. My wife loves to fly and she does it for fun. Unfortunately, it is expensive and she hasn't been up as much as she'd like since we had kids and she quit work for a few years. Good luck and have fun... just don't be cocky.
First thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread, heh. Clearly, the best PF song in the post Waters era or as some so callously like to call it, the "Pink Fraud" era.
There is one key in learning to fly, when you throw yourself at the ground, you have to miss accidentally.
