I'm confused too. I live in Austin and I'm a DTV subscriber. How is it I can catch the Rockets games without league pass?
I think if DirecTV gives you channel 51 and you have a Houston billing address, then you will get all the Rockets games. I originally thought of ordering League Pass, but I'm only interested in Rockets games. Maybe I'll use a friend's Htown address. I live in College Station. We were supposed to get local channels from Waco in "2004". I have no idea why DirecTV doesn't realize that it's 2004 already and almost 2005. So at this time, I don't have ABC, CBS, FOX, UPS, WB or anything else. So, the main question is: I know that in Htown, channel 51 can be had over the antenna; however, if you don't have antenna access, does DirecTV offer channel 51 Houston?
Kim is right. If Channel 51 is offered on Direct TV in Houston and you register the unit as a HOUSTON unit you will get all the games. DD
Cool, well I'm not gonna be the guinea pig, so someone test it out and let the rest of us know. It looks likes the key to the deal is if Direct TV or Dish Network offers 51 for Houston.
When is the Astros/Rockets station going to come out? Starting 05/06 seasons? I hope ComCRAP, I mean Comcast up here in Dallas picks it up.

I found this is similar to our situation.. http://www.dbsforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=38662 Phanbear New Member Registered: Sep 2004 Location: SC Posts: 1 Local Cahannel Question I have DirecTV in South Carolina. I am a newbie to this satellite stuff, and I have a question about local channels, which we do not get down here. I am originally from Pittsburgh and would love to get the Pittsburgh local channels. Can I "move" my service address to somewhere in Pittsburgh and get the Pittsburgh local channels? From some internet research, I have learned that these channels are on transponder 28. I am clearly not inside the Pittsburgh spot beam here. However, when I do a test on that transponder, it shows that I am receiving a signal of moderate strength (I guess from Raleigh, which is also on transponder 28). If I "move" my service address to Pittsburgh and get those channels activated, will I get them here since I can get a signal on transponder 28, or do I have to be within the footprint of the Pittsburgh transponder 28 signal? If I do this and it works, will I suffer any other problems with receiving any other channels? It will not work.
A map of the spot beams can be found here: http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/dtv.html Houston has two of them. If you want to be guaranteed of receiving the Houston stations, you must live within the red oval. That is approximately north to Dallas, south to the Mexico border, east into Louisiana, and west to the middle of the state. It should be pointed out that giving them a fake "service address" is technically illegal, roughly on par with jumping the turnstile in a subway.
Thank you very much EDC, look like Port Arthur is in the Houston local range.....I'm goona take chance to try....i'll let yall know..
EDC, Not illegal at all, you are paying for the service, just getting billed at a different address. I don't think Direct TV cares as long as you are paying your bills. You can even get direct billing on a credit card, and thus no actual bill ever goes out. DD
Yes it is illegal to add another box and move it......spot beams work within a certain area....if you got a box in houston and activated it....you would have those locals as far as the houston spot beam is in your area. If you moved the box to NY or something you wouldn't get the Houston locals because the signal doesn't go that far. Check the map on this thread to see if your city is within the spot beam map..if so then it will work for you!
It is "illegal" because it is a direct violation of your terms of service. The deal you sign indicates your service address is actually where you live. For "just being TV," there are lots of silly rules. To take a trivial example, giving a Houston service address while you are physically in College Station means that you are getting Houston CBS instead of Bryan CBS. No big deal, except that Bryan CBS may include the satellite figures in their viewership and (since the market is so small), one fewer viewer might lower their ad rates, especially for local news and such. Incidentally, should you decide to "move," remember to check all your DTV receivers, and make sure they have a Houston zip code Probably not. Only a handful of the preseason games are on LP. The Sunshine network is carrying it back to Miami. There is currently no local carrier listed for Houston.
edc, what about all the people that have direct tv in their RV's and travel around the country? I see no problem with what DaDakota is doing. Besides DTV uses spot beams to transmit its local stations so if a card is programed by DTV for Houston then you will not get any local chanals at all once you get out of the reception area of that satalite. For instance you can not get Houston locals in Dallas no matter what you do to your reciever because the spot beam from the satalite does not extend as far north as Dallas. However, you could by pass the black out rule if your reciever was set up for another region.
There is a separate contract RV owners sign. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/learn/dns_vehicles.dsp RV folks who play by the rules are prohibited from signing up for League Pass (or any of the other sports packages).
The reason they don't allow League Pass in RV's is because DTV requires that a land based phone line be hooked up at all times to the reciever. Of course that is not possible in an RV.
Man, Look at that map Transponder 28 is ALL OVER the place, so you could get Houston channels almost everywhere in the country. DD
Nope. Transponder 28 carries different programming in different parts of the country. In Texas(-ish), it is Houston programming. In the Northeast, it is Boston programming. That is why they call them "spot" beams. If you are really curious: http://www.tivofan.com/directv/channels.html
Well, I'm in north Dallas, I wonder if it would work. It would beat the hell out of paying for league pass, just to be able to see the Rox.
Wow, yall guys are very good, i'm enjoy reading this thread, alot of informations, and the bottom line is how to get to watch the Rockets games, please do not lock this thread, keep them coming. I thought i never get to watch the Rockets games in Port Arthur, but now there's litle light at the tunnel..I will try my best to make this happen. Thanks to Dakota, Edc & Slowdrag (the one starting this thread)...
