unless you buy something like 55 or 60 inch tv, it would be really hard to tell 1080p. u can get some great deals on 720p tvs. i just bought one, waiting for it to be delivered. good places to buy tvs on web: onecall, tigerdirect, buy.cm good retail places, bestbuy, hometheaterstore
For playing games, can you go too big? Would a 55" or 60" be too much to look at? Does that question make sense? Is there anything else that you need to look for when buying an HDTV in regards to video games? I remember reading something about lag. Should I go ask RC Cola in one of his threads?
It's going to depend on the TV. Plasmas used to be a big no for games because of burn in. They have improved, but it seems most gamers don't like to take the chance. DLPs are usually the way most gamers go. LCDs are also good. I've heard things about lag with both so who knows. I'm running an XBOX 360 on a 50 inch DLP right now and it looks really good.
Don't ask me specifics when it comes to gaming and HDTVs. I can give some general advice, but nothing tinman or some of the other guys wouldn't be able to provide (and they'd be able to give advice I certainly couldn't).
(bump) I just got my 52" Panasonic LCD Projection TV delivered today. I'm pretty pumped. ESPN HD and HBO look gorgeous with the 1080i signal. First order of business was to turn the picture mode down to "cinema" (instead of vivid) to preserve my lamp.
how far are you sitting away from your tv? heres a forum on video game lag: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558125 read the xbox forums for gaming tvs, they are good. i think sony is good in general for tvs. toshiba. samsung's older models have lag, then newer ones have a 'game mode' to improve lag. 50-55 is good, 60 if u have huge living room.
