Ok. So how many picks is that going to cost Denver?????? Hinkie isn't going to do that for nothing.

Denver is better off to buy him out in a deal that saves them money and assets.

Agree about Rubio. He is an awful fit and the idea of bringing him in AND giving up significant assets for him is terrible and would be crippling to the Rockets.

However, I don't see a trade fit, other than the Knicks. And even for the Knicks, it makes 2016 FA much harder for them. It would leave them with less than $9M in cap space and no assets (save this year's draft choices) to clear contracts.

Agree. Plus, Philly doesn't want to win yet and Lawson is a potential cancer to their young players, if he is pissed about being on an awful team.

A buyout will be an agreement to an amount less than he is owed. It is much better to buy him out and not have to attach assets to get a team (like Philly) to trade for him. Denver knows they are at least a couple years from contending and aren't going to be a destination for FAs, so the cap hit staying isn't a big deal.

Best case scenario now is probably trading him without real salary returned and getting no assets.

    Most likely is a buyout.

    DNI cann't mean anything!
Is he a bad guy? maybe. but the team doesn't need only nice guy, we need elite players!
Is Rodman a good guy? No! but he is a great player

They won't have to eat $25 million if they buy him out.

    ==========================================

Before today's news I would have answered you this way.

Denver is under the cap. They have the ability to renegotiate Lawson's deal and actually give him a raise for this season. And they've got to spend $63 million anyways.

So, they could technically renegotiate and give Lawson a $3 million raise this season in exchange for making next season non-guaranteed. Then they could cut him and he could sign a 2-year MLE deal elsewhere and recoup every cent of what he had given up.

    ==============================================

Now that was before today's news of his 3rd DUI.

Now I'm not sure there's even a team out there that would be willing to give him the entire MLE. So he may have to accept a buyout that might cost him a few dollars.

Let's say they buy him out for his salary this season. He's losing $13 million on the last year of his deal. They he signs elsewhere for 2/$6 million, a portion of the MLE. So, he's essentially given up $7 million over 2 seasons to get out of town.

Will that happen?? I dunno. Lawson is acting very unreasonably at this point. I would doubt he'd be willing to give up very much. He'll probably play hardball and Denver may have to resort to option 1 I laid out above to get rid of him. Remember, he's toxic. Just like Josh Smith (or maybe even worse) was last season.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Either of these scenarios saves Denver $$, cap space for 2016, and assets they'd have to give up if they traded Lawson today. They can let him sit at the house to start the season and hope, hope, hope that a contender has a PG injury and gets desperate enough to trade for Lawson without it costing them so much. But that's all desperation on their part. Every day he sits at the house while they're playing ball this coming season, he's costing them money and a roster spot.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver's last option??? Do nothing and let Lawson sit it out at the house until they can figure out what to do with him. They don't want him around Mudiay.

I don't care, the league already hates us anyway. We need him. We should get him.

Hopefully Dallas signs Deron Williams and a bunch of other old bums before that happens.

U guys haven't known NBA players' secrets.
If u guys have konwn some secrets, u would think almost a half of the NBA players shouldn't join in any team
a lot of players have some trouble the fans didn't knew and will never know

This is the perfect buy-low scenario. It would be great if we could have Lawson for Kostas and a future first

    1. That's not enough salary.

    2. That's ridiculously overpaying giving up a future first for him.

    3. Kostas' non-guaranteed deal may be worth more in another trade than Lawson when we can likely get Lawson as a free agent if we want him.

    Understand what buy low is.

Yet he's not becoming a better fit for the team.

Starting to wonder if his guaranteed salary for 2016/2017 really matters. We have two options for dealing with it:

    1) Trade him into someone else's cap space, which likely won't cost much (if anything) with the cap jumping up to $90 million. Assuming we've been able to reform him (I think we could), then he shouldn't have negative value.

    or

    2) Stretch him. This isn't Morey's modus operandi, but if Durant is there, I could see it. That would lower his cap hit from $13.2 to $4.4, and we'd probably have to move out both Brewer and Ariza to create enough space.

So I don't think getting him for peanuts is as high risk as it seems. I could see something like Papa, Prigs, TJones, Dorsey, $1.5 million cash (to cover Dorsey and Prigs guarantees), HOU 2016 1st, and the rights to Llull and/or Gentile. If pushed, I could include the rights for Harrell as well.

    Beverley / Lawson / Johnson
    Harden / Thornton / Terry
    Ariza / Brewer / McDaniels
    DMo / Smith / Dekker
    Howard / Capela / Harrell

If Lawson is a success, then sure that $13 million won't be tough to move. If he messes up again, that will be $13 million in dead money. That would not be easy to move, especially in the short span of the early days of FA next summer. Without being assured Lawson can be reformed, the risk is large.

The Rockets would already don't have enough cap room for a third max next summer. Adding $4.4 million in dead salary space with a stretch (and having to lose Ariza) is obviously a big negative.

Lawson isn't going to fetch that much now. You're basically paying his contract and giving away a couple firsts in that deal.

If you were going after someone like Durant for example, who cares about losing Ariza?

Agree. At this point, the best bet is to wait out a buyout.

Assuming we resign KJ to a deal, you've got him and Dekker as potential options to replace Ariza and Brewer. You might be skeptical of giving two young guys significant time as backups, but remember, you got Durant.

Another option is to help Lawson get to the Knicks. Why? I'd love to get Jerian Grant.
