China's influence on US Politics is becoming a very serious and scary issue. China's foreign policy on many issues is to bring the demise of the United States and take over as the world power and seems to be using our own political system to fan the flames of their goals. George Washington and our founding fathers were against lobbying groups for the simple reason that money should not be able to buy our representatives decisions, the poplular opinion should.

Looking at it from a financial perspective, the WTO and the US are opening up more trade with China, but our experiences so far have been a significant trade deficit because of government laws to protect chinese companies from competition yet using the competetive nature of the US for their benefit. Many companies such as Qualcomm, have been teased by the Chinese that they will get contracts there, but ultimately the business goes to mainly Chinese (usually inefficient government run) companies.
We saw the same scenario with Kodak in Japan's competition with Fuji Film. There were laws forcing competition in the US making Fuji accessible to the public, but in Japan, the government constantly levied higher taxes and implemented policies to push consumers to stay with brands like Fuji over US brands like Kodak.

I am a fan of Globalization, but it must be on equal terms. Capitalism is contagious, but the firm rule of the Chinese and their power in the US lobby will weaken us from the inside if we do not learn to focus on US/American interests instead of that from lobby groups. The Chinese lobby recently surpassed the Jewish Lobby for the financially strongest lobby/PAC in the US.
That means another nation has some of the strongest influence over OUR representatives and their actions that are supposed to benefit US Citizens. A bit scary to say the least...

Well, no. I don't fall into any of Jerry's favourite sin categories. (btw, I thought all sin was equal. Why is it that Jerry picks a select few to focus on?) Perhaps it is because I fit into his demographic that I'm offended by his stance. I feel that he misrepresents me and my faith.

"The greatest damage done to Christianity today is done by those who profess Christ with their mouths and deny him with their actions and lifestyle." I caught this quote on a television show a while back, but I can't remember who said it.

Jerry points his finger and condemns a select group of sinners. Christ associated with sinners. He didn't condemn them. He told them about forgiveness by grace. Jerry talks about legalism and emphasises works. If we were judged by our actions, we'd all be condemned. It's about faith, hope and love, not works. (see Romans)

Christ even defended sinners against angry judgmental church leaders. (see John 8) He intervened to prevent the condemnation of a person caught an act of *sexual immorality.*

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5) Do you see these qualities in Jerry? If not then I think you have question/discern what the basis for his actions and positions really is.

It sure does. That is a standard used in our courtrooms. This is not a courtroom.

I prefer to side with Flynt's daughter on this one. She has a very good reason not to rock the boat and love her Dad (inheritance).

FD Khan, great post on China. I could not agree more. The United States business community values money more than morals. We sold out to China, and we will pay a price.

Jeff, I appreciate your post about spiritual humility. Religious dogma is now the greatest threat to world peace. The coming battle over the Temple of the Mount in Jerusalem and the conflict between Pakistan and India over Kashmir seem inevitable because of religious differences.

LOL, this turned out to be a pretty good thread considering the polarizing nature of the article.

I wish I could find an article about this case, because I remember back when it came out seeing an interview with the daughter, and she wasn't very believable.

Shame I can't find an article on it though...

Tonya Flint's Statement from Jan 7. 1997 NOW-NYC Press Conference

My name is Tonya Flynt. I am here to tell you that the portrayal of my father, Larry Flynt, in Oliver Stone and Milos Forman's movie is a pack of lies. My father, the founder and publisher of Hustler Magazine, is not a hero who has sacrificed everything to fight censorship and protect freedom of speech. He doesn't give a damn about freedom of speech. All he cares about is making millions of dollars out of the sexual exploitation of women and children.
My father is a pornographer, a pimp, and a molester of children. I say this with pain and sorrow because in spite of everything he has done, I still love my father. I also say this with fear, because my father has threatened me and my daughter. But I feel I have a responsibility to expose the truth about my father. Making Larry Flynt a hero justifies and makes invisible the harm he has done to women and children. It silences their voices and muffles their cries of pain. This is exactly what Oliver Stone's movie has done.

Grizzled,

So are we, as Christians, supposed to sit back and not take a stand on what we feel is right and wrong. I agree that it isnt anyones place to pass judgement on anyone but you make it sound like we should just let people do what ever they want and not speak out on things that we know to be wrong. Homosexuality for example. I think it is wrong. I dont want my kids growing up thinking that it is right or acceptable. I dont want my kids reading about it in school. I also do not want my kids to gay bash or think that because it is wrong that they have a right to look down on that person. Love the person, not the sin type of attitude. When do I have to stand up and say, Hey, this isnt right when homosexuality is being forced down peoples throats. If you do not think that homosexuality is right, people give you a PC beating. I know that there are people out there that feel the same way I do but do not have the balls to stand up and say what they think because of the repercussions of others. It is easier to say what is PC instead of what you truly feel. I know that I can only get to Heaven by faith alone but when you accept God you also are supposed to be a light for him and that can only be done through works.

Oh please. Heterosexuality is forced down our throats a million times more than you and your kids are exposed to homosexuality. We'll stop "flaunting" our lifestyle in public when you guys do the same thing.

I'm not going to disparage someone who might be the victim of child abuse. However, I have to wonder what movie Tonya Flynt watched. I thought The People vs. Larry Flynt made it very clear that Flynt was way more interested in money (and sex) than Constitutional rights, and that he took used a First Amendment defense for his own means. Of course, the case became bigger than Flynt and became a genuine footnote in the history of the First Amendment. There's a great book by Anthony Lewis, Make No Law, that spends a chapter on the importance of the case. Not that Larry Flynt really deserves any credit, but because he was the defendant, he inevitably is associated with the case.

I recently read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, who is probably considered the greatest writer of Christian thought of the 20th century. I would highly advise that anyone who finds Falwell's comments about 9/11 reasonable read this book. Then we can discuss.

You proved my point exactly. I say how I think it is wrong and how it is becoming socially acceptable and you become sarcastic. Of course you arent going to agree with me because you are gay and you dont want to hear how homosexuality is wrong. I am going to continue to teach my kids that it is not right and to not accept it as an alternative. Homosexuality is flaunted. ie. When was the last time heterosexuals had a straight pride parade.

When was the last time you saw 2 gay men holding hands and kissing in public?

When was the last time you saw a wedding announcement for 2 lesbians in the newspaper?

When was the last time you saw a TV show about gays or lesbians raising kids?

We'll gladly trade our parade for any of the above ways you guys flaunt your sexuality.

Why do people act as if these characters such as Falwell have power over their lives and are so threatened by them? They say something you don't like so you denounce them and anyone purporting to be sympathetic. Why not just consider what is said and either cull something positive out of it or just forget about it altogether.

Someone here likened Falwell to be worse than a terrorist.

Why is everyone so proud of being offended by something that someone said? PC is a liability not a virtue. It makes you self-important and narrow-minded.

I am far more affected by Jesse Jackson's BS than you are by Falwell's. Jesse is getting into my pocket book by promoting wasteful spending of tax dollars. Now that is something to complain about.

I heard a ladly on the radio today; she said something that kind of made sense. She eschewed the traditional labels of Democrat vs. Republican or Liberal vs. Conservative; she claimed the only operative terms were individualist vs. socialist. I like its simplicity.

Jeff: Evil manifests itself in many ways. If, as according, to your little Dafoe ditty, disease is "intelligently" seeking out the good for early demise, isn't that evil?! For God's sake yes. The randomness of evil (i.e. the innocent WTC/Pentagon victims) makes some seek Their Maker and makes others bitterly reject Their Maker all over again. That's evil.

I never consider what Falwell or any human says as "pronouncement of truth." It is their opinion. I consider it. That's all. It may ring true; it may not.

Grizzled: "Why is it that Jerry (Falwell) picks a select few (particular sins) to focus on?"

RR: You are right. Sin is sin and by that logic , theoretically, we are all responsible for the events of 9/11 to some degree or another. But, pragmatically, the groups that Falwell cited for their sins are politically active and organized-- seeking to change traditional values... making for an unGodly world in Falwell's opinion. I can understand why he opposes that.
Those sinners have an impact on the world that the lustful do not.

That is the difference. We arent flaunting anything and what heterosexuals do is normal. I dont know if God made homosexuals that way or not. I am not God and cannot answer that. I have never had the problem of being attracted to men. All I know is that the Bible tells me it is wrong and the Bible is not flawed. Those are Gods words, not mine. If God did make people that way then obviously it was for a reason. Dont ask me what it is because I dont know. I sure as hell do not have the answers and dont pretend too. My personal opinion is that it is not innate for a person to be homosexual. We were watching Boston Public on Monday and my son came down while it was on. We do not allow him to watch that show because it is very racey. He saw two guys kissing on the show and his first reaction was gross. He doesnt understand homosexuality and we sure havent talked to him about it. We did explain that some people do that and that we think it is wrong. We also explained that just because we think it wrong does not mean that we cannot be friends with them.

just be careful to not condemn the person, master. sounds like that's what you're doing with your kid. I agree with you..I too will tell my kid that I believe homosexuality is wrong...but (get ready...huge cliche coming!) i have a few gay friends who are terrific people and who deserve no less respect than my heterosexual friends.

We are to speak, but not judgementally, I believe. Christ didn't lead angry rebellions. He inspired people to change their hearts. Love and compassion speaks louder than anger and self-righteousness, or even X number of good works. I agree with the "love the sinner not the sin" attitude and I think that as Christians we are to "live in the world but not be of the world." We live amongst sinners of all sorts every day, and we ourselves are all sinners. The difference is the faith, and the grace received by faith. We show the world our faith by the way we live, and by that I mean by displaying love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, not by performing X good deeds or making grand public displays etc.(Mathew 23). By living by the spirit, we want to do things that are in keeping with the law, but I think the light that you talk about comes from the spirit you operate by, not the works that you do. Because of the light you want to do good works, but the works themselves are empty without the light that is the driving force for them.

And we need to be very careful not to judge, I believe. Romans 1 list all sorts of sins including homosexuality, greed, deceit, gossip, arrogance, and disobeying one's parents. All are listed together, without an order of priority. Romans 2 says immediately after, "You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things." As soon as we point a finger at someone, we point it at ourselves and the world will see us as hypocrites. I believe that we need to strive to live by the spirit, which isn't always easy to do, but by doing so we will live in peace with ourselves, and other's will see that in us, and see the light that is the source of the peace.

MM, We really tired to make it clear that we are saying that we do not think that the person is bad. My great aunt is a lesbian and we used her specifically as an example. We said that she is gay. It doesn't mean that we love her any less, we just do not agree with the decision that she has made.

Does your Aunt feel that she made a decision to be a lesbian, or does she feel an instinctual urge to be with women?

I dont know, I have never talked to her about it. She lives in Colorado and I have never been around her a whole lot. My mom is very close to her and I may ask her if she has discussed it with her.
