I just planted a Mexican Fan Palm in my front yard. It's in a spot about 10' away from the house and 6-7' away from a sidewalk. I went to Houston Lawn and Garden yesterday with intentions of buying a Chinese Fan Palm because they grow slow and don't get ridiculously tall. But, the Mexican Palm was on sale for half the price. I didn’t know anything about this tree at the time and got it because of the deal. But after researching I’ve read that this damn tree grows quickly and can grow to be over 100’ TALL. I planted it in a spot that doesn’t get much sunlight until late afternoon, so I imagine that’ll stunt its growth some. But has anyone here planted one of these? How fast does it actually grow in Houston’s climate? I’d like to get about 5-7 years out of this thing before I have to worry about it getting out of control. Right now its about 2-3’ tall.
IN before "How did you know that they were MEXICAN? Did you ask? What if they were from Colombia? Perhaps you should ask! You do not know I'm Hispanic and from El Salvador!!!?!?!? Shame on you!!!" questionings.
I think that's what my parents have at home...i guess it depends on how well it was planted and other factors, since they have 4 and only 2 are huge. One is like 10-12' and the other is about 15'. The bigger ones are probably 35-40 feet, IIRC. They were planted about 7-10 years ago. These are in the front yard though, with no shade at all.
