Most people on these boards are Rockets fans. Sometimes this love of the Rockets manifests itself in the form of "homerism". Meaning that poster are more likely to downplay the negative aspects of a players game if he is playing for their team. (i.e people like to mention Martins ability to score, but very few mention his atrocious defensive skills) Example of how opinions of Landry changed: Landry (as a Rocket) - Go MANDRY - He's tough as nails - Mr. 4th Quarter - He's our go to guy - Dude has alot of heart and that makes up for his lack of size Landry (as a King) - Well, his defense is suspect - He wasn't THAT important to the team success - His rebounding was always weak - He's undersized, and heart can only do so much. * Its been true of Landry all along that his defense and rebounding were the two weakest points of his game. But when he was a Rocket he didn't recieve as much criticism for these flaws. Now that he plays for another team, posters on this board now feel comfortable examining the flaws in his game. This may also be an attempt to minimize what we lost in the Kevin Martin trade. Afterall if Landry wasn't all that great...we didn't lose all that much. My personal opinion- He's a hell of a offensive power forward, although his defense is lacking and the defensive rebounding isn't what you would want out of your pf position. However given his toughness and dirt cheap contract (at least right now) I'd certainly find a roster spot for him on my team.
*Continuation of above post* Now lets examine Scola (assuming that he too leaves the team) Scola (as a Rocket) - Viva Scola - Scola is better than Landry - BEAST MODE!!!! - He's so durable - He hustles - He draws charges (and sometimes flops) Scola (as a ???????) - Well...he was on the wrong side of 30, how many games does he have until he starts to break down? - I see he still can't go left. - HE'S A FLOPPER!!!! - _______ is better than Scola - I see that they practice flopping on the Argetine national team. etc. Is it a little hypocritical...perhaps, but on any teams website you will run into "homers" and clutch fans is no exception
I disagree with a lot of things said in this thread. For one, rebounding is not something players tend to develop as they get older -- a lot of it has to do with abilities that are either inherent or developed before they enter the league. This is why one of the skills that translates best from the college level to the NBA level is rebounding, much more so than scoring at least. You can't teach someone to have a great motor, great reaction time or a low center of gravity (something players like Landry and Stoudemire lack).
That's not necessarily true. First, it is easier to be motivated to get offensive rebound than defensive rebound, because with OR, you get a chance to score. Just like it is easier to be motivated on offense than on defense. Second, OR and DR require different sets of skills. OR requires quickness. You try to sneak past the defender when the shot is put up. DR requires discipline in boxing out and strength in holding back the opponents.
I like Landry. I like Scola. I like Martin. I wish all three players could be playing for the Rockets. However, if I can only choose two to be Rockets. I choose Scola and Martin.
Landry is a scorer who happens to do his scoring from the post, but he doesn't really bring any other big man qualities with him such as rebounding and paint protection... We sort of traded a 1-D post scorer for a 1-D perimeter scorer...but kevin martin is a better scorer than Landry is, plus we needed a scoring SG WAY MORE than we needed a scoring post (since we already have Scola, and Yao will be back next year)... it was a very good trade.
I have noticed that his numbers are decent, but from the ESPN boxscores, it looks like he has had the worst +/- by far on his team in the last few games. How is that possible? Is it because of his defense - because his offensive numbers look ok.
He seems to be having the same production as he did in Houston, but with increased minutes and as a starter. I guess that's partly because they don't go straight to him as often as we did because they have Tyreke Evans. His efficiency is still pretty good.
Not for long. Landrys points may go up with Evans being sidlined for a while. Evans missed his sixth game of the season on Sunday. The point guard’s injuries—including a bruised jaw, lacerated gums and chipped teeth—resulted from Ersan Ilyasova’s(notes) inadvertent elbow while they were going for a loose ball during the final minute of regulation on Friday night. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AoUYVxiIH.dddLwYqUI6wlK8vLYF?slug=ap-kings-evansout
Without Evans playing, Landry has scored 20 points in 23 minutes, shooting 9-12 from the field. Now that's the Landry I know. The Kings need to recognize what they have and look for Carl more in the post when Evans comes back.
