Thanks... interesting to see they get $1050 deducted every 2 week for MLB "dues"... I wonder if that is dependent on service time, or does every MLB player get charged the same rate? Also cool to see the tax's per city/state they charge, something I don't see city or state governments ever mentioning or citing when highly paid athletes play a bunch of road games in their stadiums (conceivably, could a stadium simply be funded by taxes paid by road players?)
Caveat: all of this is off the top of my head, and I'm sure I'll just muddy things up further If they put him on the 15 day DL, he could stay with and travel with the big club and work out with the coaches and whatnot for as long as he's on the list. If he is optioned to the minors there *is* a date where he has to report to that team and be placed on their roster, and I believe the 10 day period before he can come back is based on that date. Where he physically is doesn't matter so much. MLB does not look too kindly on roster shennanigans like that, though. So I'd imagine he'll be in Corpus working with Brocail while the guys go on a long road trip. Then he'll meet them back in Houston. You really didn't know about the "jock tax"? It's a CPA's wet dream. Started in the early '90s in, shockingly, California. Florida and Texas (at least, maybe others) do not have this, because there's no state income tax, but it does apply to municipalities regardless. Also: MLB's union dues are $70/day per player, so that's the $1050 you're talking about.
I thought about this earlier. The negative is that, if he's put on the DL, you don't have the option to recall him in the event of an emergency (Kazmir sprains an ankle or something). He'd be on the DL until eligible to come off. This way, you have an additional 5 days of flexibility (10 vs 15) + additional emergency flexibility during the 10 days.
I would be completely shocked if that factored at all into their decisions at this point in the season, given where the team is.
Yea I'm sure it wasn't a driving force at all But if the DL option was discussed at all (it probably wasn't but that's what I was responding to), then that would be another advantage of the option
Oh, I heard of it... just hardly ever see it mentioned when all the cities are complaining about how sports teams suck up resources and don't really give anything back to the community of monetary value. But seriously... with the amount of stadium funding issues that seem to exist in every state EXCEPT for Florida/Texas (which have both put up new or renovation stadium projects for ALL their teams over the last 20 years), why couldn't you apply some sort of stadium funding project via this tax? Is there a specific place this money has to go to? As far as the MLB dues... that's a cool 15-20K for a full season. Chump change to a guy like McCutchen (who makes 400K, after taxes, every 2 weeks), but a pretty good dent to a young guy making 500K total before taxes. And are these players union dues, or separate?
Eh, I hear what you are saying. But if you are making 500K and it turns into "only" 480K, you might make it
I think its a lot less than that, after all these taxes and deductions. Its still plenty enough to live off of... just saying MLB dues are a lot money for some players vs. others.
Those are the MLBPA dues, flat 70/day per player. 2100/month. Juicy (can't believe I'm calling a grown man "juicy"), you're the resident accounting expert, anything else to add? I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous. As far as stadium construction and whatnot, if the state has an income tax, that income is treated just like anyone else's. Same with a municipality, it's treated as income the same as if it was from Joe's Liquor Store or whatever. If a municipality or state wanted to add on an extra tax on all pro athletes and devote it to facilities I don't know what would stop them, other than the inevitable lawsuit.
I learned to stay away from the financial part of sports long ago. If it takes away from the sport, meh I could care less. If they show up and play hard, I like them. I dislike that it tears teams apart, but I am an old sports fan that enjoys the sport for what it is.
Haha. It's one thing to know they make a lot but it's another thing to see that statement when it looks just like mine but with extra numbers.
That's it. I've lost all confidence in him now as a starting pitcher...I mean he's still solid but can't see him as good anymore. Definitely not a #1 anymore, more like a #7. A true #1 wouldn't give up another ER the rest of the season. /various annoying posters
