I'm not sure why that's so weird. There's a laundry list of players with all-world talent (like Berkman) who did not do what it took to be "all that they could be", for various reasons. Cesar Cedeno, if you want another Astro example.
Lance is in the Hall of Fame of truly nice guys. As far as the baseball HOF I get why they snubbed him. The one fact we will never know is the guys from his era used PED and I am just about as sure as I can be his rarely working out twinkie face didn't care about taking anything to enhance his performance. His all natural numbers are very nice versus the PED guys he just didn't have the longevity required.
