Except the situations weren't really all that similar. Dwight didn't choose to go there nor did he sign a long term contract.
I agree. I think the addition of Kaman with their 'room exception' on a 1 year deal was very good and great value for that. Depending on Kobe comes back, that team will probably be around 10th in the West and end up picking like 12 in the draft.
Kobe on his rehab: "I'm progressing faster than everybody expected so I'm very happy with it." He is targeting mid August for full activity https://twitter.com/mcten/status/355103905639698433 KOBE to be at full activity in 4 weeks. That means no restrictions but later stages of tendon recovery still remain. Will see him at Game 1. https://twitter.com/DrRobertKlapper/...05027779608576
Man oh man, this is not going to end well. If you total Kobe's games, including playoffs, you get like 1459. That's nearly equivalent to 18 full NBA seasons of wear and tear. Not on a guy who walks up the court like Kareem either. That injury was his body trying to tell him something. EDIT: Kobe's total is about 200 over what chubby Jordan had when he retired from the Wizards, for what it's worth.
http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-...lanning-to-take-a-pay-cut-in-2014/2013/07/10/ So Kobe apparently doesn't want to sacrifice some money to bring in star help. It's pretty amazing that if Kobe Bryant actually doesn't take a paycut(which is unlikely as the Lakers would have no cap room in 2014), then his max would almost be as big as Harden and Howard combined.

I'm not sure the Lakers can do that. If they offered him, say, $16mil, I can definitely see some random scrub teams like the Kings or the Bobcats offer him $20mil. I mean, what do they have to lose? It's not like anyone else will take that money. Then there will be a crapstorm in LA possibly even bigger than this offseason. Basically Kobe has the Lakers by the balls now that Howard has left.
I think the Lakers might welcome being able to blame Kobe's greed on a divorce, they want to rebuild, you can tell they do, but right now they're not allowed to.
I am wondering if the Lakers f'd up by keeping Kobe instead. I get that he is the greatest SG for them. And arguably one of the greatest players in this league. But if you were running a business, And had the chance to keep Howard, and get a prime time player like a Chris Paul this offseason...did the Lakers, bc of emotion risk their franchise brand and reputation???
