I don't know. Why would the Grizzlies trade their franchise player for an expiring contract, two late first round picks, and a second rounder (and weeks before the deadline)?

I believe the only reason that Kupchak and Jackson are mentioning a possible trade is to light a fire under the team and give the players some extra motivation to turn things around ASAP.

Plus, when you look at the Lakers roster they have a lot of talented players but the problem is that there are very few players that they would consider trading and have decent trade value. I think those players might include Odom, Artest, and Bynum.

In a normal year I'm sure they probably could get good value in a Bynum trade but with the uncertainty of the new CBA and Bynum's injury history I just don't think they will get a difference maker in a trade for him this year. Artest has a good contract and is still capable of playing great at times but I seriously doubt there are very many teams that would take a chance on him, especially teams with a losing record. That has disaster written all over it so I doubt any teams would trade a good player for him. So of those players the only one that the Lakers would have a chance to get great return on is Odom. The problem with that however is that the Lakers biggest problem is their defense and Odom is their best overall defender. Plus his game gives the Lakers the luxury of playing him at the 3, 4, or 5 depending on the matchups. So they would be losing a lot if they traded him regardless of what they get in return.

The only other options are either for the Lakers to take on additional salary in a trade, in order to get a high quality player or trade Gasol to get back several quality players that would fill up the holes in their rotation. If that ever becomes the case (highly doubtful) I'm sure Morey will be calling Kupchak on a daily basis.

If they are serious about making a trade I will be curious to see what they are willing to do. If I was them however, I would keep the team together this year and then make any changes after the new CBA is in place. I'm sure once the playoffs start they will flip the switch and raise their game.

Mitch is going to offer up Lamar and Artest for Melo.
