No matter how mediocre they will be, the lakers will always be relevant to the media.

Congrats to Kobe though on getting his money but at least we know they won't be a threat for the next 3 years at least and I can live with that.

    Damn shame.

I was hoping we'd be able to trade kirby for Harden. Now it's an impossibility.

So does this mean Duncan is really the competitive one that wants to win above anything else?

Not really taking less when you are still the highest paid player for the next few years.

He is leaving 19 million on the table over the next two years, which is really not a lot of money considering the size of his contract and the money he has been paid over the years as a Laker. Not to mention, he is getting that amount of money when nobody has a clue how well he will play when he returns.

Heck, even Dwight left more money on the table than that (30 million) and Dwight was at his prime when he made that decision.

You know it's bad when even Lakersground posters are complaining. These people actually think the league is rigged AGAINST the Lakers, just to give you an idea of the level of delusion there. And yet they see the absurdity of this contract.

How narcissistic is Kobe to think that his fans would welcome this?

SO the point being HE TOOK A PAYCUT! End of.

How did he extort if as the article above mentions, he was offered that salary which was a paycut from his prior wages and he accepted it? He didn't extort anyone and he got a paycut that still pays a great amount of money but regardless is a pay cut.

Please don't compare Kobe to Tim. We know Tim is a saint and not like many superstars- ie Kobe, LBJ, Melo etc.
At the moment one could argue Kobe is worth more to the Lakers than Duncan is to the Spurs IN TERMS of off the court money. Otherwise, Duncan is as phenomenal a player in terms of sacrifice as a team could ever ask to have.

Regardless, Kobe didn't extort the Lakers and he took a pay cut.

    Christ almight.
How is it not taking less just because he is still the highest paid player/will still be the highest paid player?

IT IS STILL TAKING LESS! He took a pay cut. Maybe not a $10-15million dollar paycut but $5-7 million is still a paycut REGARDLESS of whether he is still the highest paid player OR NOT.

My problem with y'alls comment is saying stuff like he didn't take a paycut or it's not really taking less-because Tim Duncan took a greater paycut or DH12 left more money on the table. SO WHAT? He still took a paycut. Maybe not one that was enough to satisfy you, me, Lakersnation, Bill Simmons, etc but it is still less money than he was earning and is still a PAY CUT!

    Okay that's fair.

Kobe took less money, but the money he gave up is insignificant in the larger context. His contract still handicaps the Lakers considerably.

Guess we know who the Kobe apologist is. My god, how can you possible rationalize paying $24M/year for a 35 yo chucker coming off the worst possible basketball injury? Extortion is how. Don't give me this BS that Kobe & his agent had nothing to do with this. Kobe made it quite clear prior to negotiations that he wanted a big salary and even though no other team would pay him near the max, he knew he could leverage the Lakers into paying it because his off-court value is so important to them.

As a Laker hater, I love it because it ensures that the Lakers stay mediocre for the next three years. But when even Kobe sycophants (see the entirety of LG.net) are questioning the deal, you know it's bad.

You're arguing towards a guy who religiously hates Kobe, no arguing with the r****d cause he won't accept anything even if he is wrong.

Taking a "pay cut" implies that he could have gotten more. Please tell me what team would pay a 37-year old player who just got off a major injury anywhere close to 15M a year?

It's like Royce White asking for 1 million a year and claim that it's a pay cut.

A paycut can mean one of three things:

    1) He will be making less than he was
    2) He could have been paid more based on his overall value through the lens of other teams.
    3) He had an actual offer for more and turned it down

While 1) is true, 2) and 3) are not.

The Bobcats would. If you're dumb enough to think that the franchise, which isn't going anywhere, wouldn't be willing to pay the player compared to their owner on a daily basis just to get fans in the seat, then I have no words for you.

And that is why they are the Bobcats and will remain the Bobcats for some time to come.
