Too be fair lowry asked out of Houston. Our win loss with him was pretty good considering we had no one as good as harden. He is probably one of the best contracts in the NBA. 6mil for a 20+ PER?
Wow. I was just watching highlights of torontos game last night. And both Calderon and Lowry had 0 points. On only 3 shot attempts between them. But they had a combined 22 assists. Calderon had 13 and Lowry 9. And the Raptors won by a blowout. I've never seen anything like that.
They're trying to out-selfless-point-guard each other. I wish I were kidding. They're both trying to make a point, that they can be the better team player while the minutes at PG are still timeshared for the time being. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
Calderon is more mature, vocal and the better leader than Lowry, who can be immature when things aren't going well.
Per can be so misleading.. Yes it's a magic # to compare players @ different positions, but players like Greg Smith who have crazy high fg% have 20+ PER too. I cant remember the exact #, but before last season I think Lowry had a career PER around 15 or 16.(Even with Lin's stinky season so far from 3pt his PER is 14 or so I believe.) Last year in a short season Lowry had a 20+ PER and this year with less than 20 games played because of 2 injuries he is again 20+. People knocked Lin because of the small sample size in NY last year, but don't seem to do the same thing for Lowry. I think Calderon's career PER is actually higher than Lowry's. People keep knocking Calderon as a guy who puts up empty #'s, but Lowry is a golden god. So please stop with the PER 20+ for Lowry. Tell us (me in particular) more about Kyle's game and why he should start in Toronto or another team via trade. Obviously because of his high PER I already know he has a good fg%, decend 3pt% and gets to the line a lot. But what about his defense? Can he be a leader on the floor or locker room? Can he make other players around him better? Does he have a good attitude?
Uh, did you watch Lowry at all when he was in Houston? He was one of the top PG defenders around both reputationally and via advanced metrics, and he was throwing up triple doubles last season pre-injury - it's not like he's a weird PER anomaly; he was doing well by any measure. It's not a Greg Smith situation either, Lowry played 30+ minutes a game, Smith is averaging 14. Not a very good analogy. It's generally not possible to put up a 19-9-7 scoreline or so vs. low TO's and drawing lots of fouls and not be helping your team immensely - but that's what he does when he's on.
Did you see how hesitant Lowry looked when he attempted his second shot? Weird how in trying to get his starting job back, instead of elevating his game, he's passing up open shots. Only on the Raptors... wonder how this plays out when Raptors schedule gets harder. And notice the lack of the 2PG lineup lately. It's because Calderon is finally getting his starter minutes, so no need to find ways to increase the minutes of the backup PG.
No I didn't see many Rockets games last season, that's why I asked for something other than PER. Thank you for doing that. I forgot about his rebounding. I just used Smith as an extreme example, but I think the Calderon(career PER) and Lin(short season) examples are valid. Lowry had average PER until this and last season. I still say small sample size when people quote his PER. It's one thing to have a PER of 20 a full 82 game season playing starter or 6th man minutes, but another to do that just part of the season. Durabitily is part of being a top 50 or better player. BTW, it looks like Lowry only had one triple double last season, but he did come close a few times. It really does explain why we got such a good draft pick for him and a big reason why we now have Harden. I'll revise my thinking on Lowry if he finish the season without any more injuries.
Lowry's per was 18.7 last season. He had a stretch of 15 games where his PER was over 20. Btw, he had 1 triple double last season if that could be called "throwing up triple doubles" at all.
Utah, Indiana, Lakers, Sacramento, and maybe Detroit. Also, this may seem crazy to many, but as bad as Deron Williams has been the last few years, I'd trade him straight up for Lowry if I were Brooklyn.
Whatever - if you think a 15-10-10 game is exponentially more victory-enhancing than a 17-9-9 one - I can't really help you.
You made 2 factual errors in your post, I was simply pointing them out. Lowry also had 6 games where he got 10+/8/8, during that stretch(15 games) he averaged 15.7pts/6.9rbs/8.7ast, impressive numbers, but then again, small sample size. To Lowry's credit, he also had another stretch of 14 games or so where he averaged 14.1/4rbs/6.2ast, again, solid numbers, above average but nothing ground breaking. I understand your love towards Lowry, but he was never this borderline all star PG everyone portraited him to be, at least not for a long enough period to be considered consistent.
Actually I didn't make any factual error- it's your nterp skills fail that led you to be too literal minded- you can't say he was "throwing up triple double last season" - rather the implication is unspecific as to quantity, the thrust of the post, which amply and snugly received, by you, was that his early season performance was excellent even by by dumb metrics like triple double(s). This is what you agree made him a borderline all star worthy of forfeiting a lotto pick for
Amazing turnaround past month with the Raptors. Lowery seems to be buying in and sharing minutes with Calderon now he's back from injury I think Barngani will be Raptor that gets traded. And whoever else might be included but not Lowery.
Yes you did. You also made a mistake by claiming Lowry's low TO, incorrect. During his first hot stretch his TOV is 3.7 which is below average. I honestly don't know what you are arguing about, of course I would take it literally, otherwise how are we supposed to accurately evaluate a player? You can't just claim a player is an all star or borderline all star without looking at specifics whether they deserve it or not. Lowry was playing at an all star level for 15 games. Thats it. Exciting numbers but small sample size. Afterall he came back down to earth and his season average indicates an above average point guard who plays tough D. Like I said I understand why you love Lowry and his game, but please, don't blindly overrate him just because you like him. I like Lowry too, but he's never that good. Just to make a point, here's another player's 25 games average last season. 18.5pts/3.7rbs/7.7ast. Yet such player kept getting criticised for being overrated and overpaid. Sample size my friend, sample size.
