I understand that they can be mutually exclusive. It's just, this whole time I thought our OL sucked, but they only suck in pass blocking. It's the OL, not the running backs right? You wanna go ahead and give me a roster breakdown and tell me why you think JH has had a better supporting cast than Carr now? And, I don't know how expansion was set up back then and I'm guessing they were obviously more veteran laden teams, but how the hell did Capers do so well at Carolina in the beginning. Jville as well.
Capers did well in Car because back then alot of teams hadn't figured out how to manipulate the FA system. They were able to acquire a bunch of talented but older players. This is also why their success was short lived. I think the main difference between JH and DC is the pass blocking abilities of the teams O lines. Our line is actually a terrific run blocking line, but they are with out a doubt the worst pass blocking line in the history of the NFL. I am not sure how much of this was due to talent and how much was due to schemes. ANY QB will struggle if they are under constant pressure. All you need to do to varify this is watch the Colts vs the Steelers this year. Manning looked absolutley terrible against Pitts because they were in his face all game long. JH's line has provided good pass protection and he still struggled, to me this indicates poor decision making. When you have time to scan the field and still make a ton of mistakes there is something lacking. Carr has not had this luxury, and this is why I think it is a tad unfair to judge him. ALOT of QBs will make bad decisions when under intense pressure, see Manning and Brady in this past seasons playoffs. If the pass protection is better this year and the receiver situation is addressed and Carr still struggles then I would hope the Texans will look for a way to acquire Quinn in next year's draft. In 04 when the pass protection was decent he put up decent numbers (3500 yds passing and 16 TDs to 14 INTs) This was with one WR and a good running game. Who knows what we could have done with a slightly better number 2 WR and a TE that can actually catch.
Jake Plummer Pre-Kubiak (6 seasons) 1540/2754 (55.9%), 17,622 yards, 90 TDs, 114 INTs, 68.3 QB rating (averaged for 6 seasons) Jake Plummer With Kubiak (3 seasons) 769/1279 (60.1%), 9637 yards, 60 TDs, 34 INTs, 88.6 QB Rating (averaged for 3 seasons)
Good point. Steve made some good points as well. I hope Carr does lead the team to the promise land. My only thing with the Plummer comparisons is that Denver is perenially a winning team while the Cardinals suck. Hopefully the Texans are more like the Broncos. We don't know what made Plummer better, was it playing with better players or in a winning environment. Probably a bit of both. Let's see if Kubiak brings that sort of winning attitude to Houston.
Some of these points have been touched upon, but I will go ahead and do my best to answer. As far as JH and DC, they are in different situations due to their OLines. JH, because of the pass protection, has shown Detroit that he wasnt capable of meeting their standards. The guy had plenty of opportunities where he just botched throws and made poor defensive reads. On the other hand, DC has been running for his life. If you look at plays where he actually has time to sit in the pocket and make his throws, he is actually incredibly accurate. Therefore, JH is being shown the door as a result of the Lions having had a system in which he should have thrived in. On the other hand, DC, as far as passing is concerned, hasnt had those same opportunities. Similiarly, the wide receivers on the Texans havent had a chance to prove what they are capable of as well (thats why I dont like the fact that Gaffney departed). The last point you made is a simple one to answer for me...Dom didnt have to deal with the mess that Casserly has created. That guy has put us in a major hole and now we gotta dig out of it. I really dont see our problems as Capers's fault...I think Charlie is the culprit.
