Don Banks is enjoying writing about the Texans (first Schaub, now Kubiak) the past couple of weeks.... almost as much as he likes making fun of the letterman jackets.
I agree with the bold part  However, I've never been one who has said that TJ Yates should get an opportunity. I believe that Yates is going to be an all time backup QB. I've always thought that Keenum would be a better option than Yates. Now I don't know what to expect from Keenum, but right now I believe they should give him a chance. He really can't do any worse than what we have been seeing from any of our QB's. But at the same time I'm not sure how much he can actually accomplish with Kubiak still having such a conservative/predictable offensive scheme.
Kubiak has a pretty impressive football resume, so why does he so often seem so clueless. Personality, temperament, or is he actually clueless? "Not having the answers when the team needs them the most" is not an unreasonable assessment.
Sadly, McNair won't fire Kubiak until the season is over, and he'll look hard to find an excuse not to do it then. Schaub, however is history.
Comfort. When he doesn't have the answers, he's not going to venture too far away from his comfort zone to find them. So he handles thing the way he's always handled them. Kubiak is what he is. He's not going to grow as a coach. If he doesn't already have the best answer to a problem, he's not going to find it.
He's never been a good head coach and the random things that come with that - his strength is coordinating the offense. But being innovative in the 1990s is not the same as being innovative today. New coaches are always building on prior systems, so Mike Leach, genius 5 or 6 years ago, is mediocre today as new coaches have improved on his system. Up and coming coaches today will create smarter versions of Chip Kelly's system, and 10 years from now, he'll likely be old news unless he can keep adapting. Kubiak's never adapted - he knows one thing and he just runs the same things he did 5 years ago and maybe from 15 years ago.
The sad part is mcnair not only let him stay on as head coach he didnt even hire an offensive coordinator to boot. Its just disfunctional all the way around. Mcnair is starting to make Jerry Jones look smart.
If you ever come across the Super Bowls on NFL Network where the Broncos were champs, squint at the TV and you'll swear you're watching the Texans play. Nothing has changed.
