why not start addressing all the problem areas? Seems like its ok to point out the foundation positions but never the QB
I think both need work... but teams never succeed without foundation positions. Teams have, however, succeeded with average QB's and strong foundation positions. They go HAND IN HAND... when it comes to determining success in the NFL... you can't have one or the other. (which is what this franchise has done so far... they've gone for glamour, but not enough guts).
yeah. you can live with a game manager. what you can't do is pay a game manager franchise QB type money which keeps you from having the kick-ass players you need at other positions to get by with that game manager.
Then more people should be putting this much effort into criticizing all the other problems/holes with this team. I know the franchise QB gets the blame because its the glamour position that gets paid as such... but knowledgable fans should take a stand (like you have) and clamor for this franchise to address ALL the things that need to be addressed. Carr has been the QB for 5 years now... but more importantly, this team has been in existance for 5 years now and they're assemblage of talent is WORSE than the day after the expansion draft. They're WORSE off now than when they started 5 years ago... they're not just starting at square one, its almost negative 3. . All joking aside, everybody tied with this team pleaded patience at the beginning of the year... even despite there being 5 years where things were "supposed" to improve. It didn't happen... 5 years wasted... complaining about it now will just make everybody more frustrated.
I missed the articles where Carr's contract kept us from improving the team all these years... from what I saw, we spent a ton of money on players who have contributed even LESS than carr has.
At this point, I just don't like the guy. I admit that's part of it. I'm tired of him. I'm tired of the excuses made for him. I'm frustrated that we passed up on better opportunities over and over again to keep him happy. I'm frustrated that we've never really given him any competition for his job. And I can't fathom running a guy out there over and over again to be mediocre, at best. It completely escapes me.
My point is that the Ravens had to pay a lot of money for that defense. It was ok to have Dilfer run the show with that defense. They couldn't have afforded much more under the cap. The Texans don't have that liberty. They've paid Carr franchise player caliber money. That's restrictive going forward. Unlike MLB, you can't afford to overpay in the NFL.
carr was a victim sunday of several contributing factors, including, but certainly not limited to his own poor play. he's been struggling for weeks... so, prior to that, he wasn't struggling? he’s averaging exactly .82 less yards a pass attempt since tennessee. yes, he’s thrown for fewer TDs, but he’s also significantly reduced his turnovers (10 in the first 7 games; 2 in the 4 games since). the team played terribly Sunday; no one is arguing otherwise. so, that’s it? we’re going to judge carr, and only carr, by the final point total? kubiak isn’t being held to that standard? his teammates who, you know, fumble at the opponent’s 6-yard line and commit penalties that wipe out a carr scramble that netted a first down at the opponent’s 11-yard line are not part of the team? he also didn’t turn the ball over, took just a single sack and missed an entire quarter… and they won. btw, ben roethlisberger completed less than 50% of his passes, averaged less than 6 yards an attempt, didn’t throw a TD but did throw two picks and the steelers won… the super bowl. And i’m guessing you would have traded roethlisberger for carr straight up 10 months ago, huh? QBs, even the great ones, often don’t go much further than their team – it is, after all, a team game… except, of course, when it comes time to crucify david carr. so “good” would be, like, maybe, his first six games….? Or has he “struggled,” and/or “sucked” all year? got, not gets – he no longer gets a free ride. since you don’t live in Houston, you’re likely not privy to how consistently hard Kubiak is riding carr, and has ridden him from day one. the days of a “free ride” are over; carr’s in definitive make or break his career time here.
You're right. He's a Super Bowl QB. He's awesome. He's just, as you say, a "victim." Yeah, I can't believe people get frustrated with him and dare to ask for change.
LOL, classic. I thought I was the only one that noticed that. I think what Ric and Nick are trying to say is that there really isn't a point in benching Carr at this point. Who do the Texans have a bigger investment in, Carr or Sage/Van Pelt? So why not let Kubiak finish evaluating him? We're not going anywhere this year and we need to make a decision during this offseason, once and for all. Yes, it sucks for us, the fans, that we have to watch this offense for the rest of the year. But at least Kubiak will know for sure what to do about it during the offseason. I know some of you have already made up your minds about Carr, and I respect that. That's part of being a fan, having opinions. But I also trust Kubiak to do the right thing in the offseason.....after a full year of evaluating Carr.
Thats fine wirth me. Just afraid that this won't really happen. Scared that next year we will be at the exact same spot because everyone has such blind faith in Carr to be the franchise qb
carr may indeed be broken. if so, he's one of MANY elements that've been broken just as long - the OL, the linebackers, the secondary... who have we passed up or missed out on because of tony boseli, ryan young, chester pitts, steve mckinney, jason babin, robaire smith, kailee wong, phillip buchannon.... where are those threads? where are those endless calls into the radio stations? nick and i - well, i'll speak only for myself - i don't have a problem with the carr bashing in theory; i certainly understand it and, to some extent, agree with it. but it does seem to come at the expense of everything else wrong with the franchise. major rips him for only scoring 14 points against buffalo without even mentioning jameel cook or chester pitts - and you wonder why we get frustrated? and yet, when carr DOES play badly, we don't hide, and we certainly don't excuse it. we're here every monday joining the chorus as long as the chorus is reasonably sane about their complaints. there, no smartass.
max, NO ONE here thinks he's "a Super Bowl QB" or "awesome." we're not idiots. such dismissive posts are very bit as frustrating as "you're right, MM, replace carr and that'll fix everything"...
the texans had an exceptional offseason; if they have an equally productive one next summer, we will NOT be in the exact same spot next year, carr or no carr.
you compared him to roethlisberger, right? wasn't he a super bowl QB??? that's not being dismissive..it's tracking your post.
I agree... it was an expensive decision... and one that may not turn out successfuly. If it backfires, it simply falls in line with all the other bad decisions this franchise has made... however, it likely doesn't even crack the top 3 of decisions that set-back this team from day one: In my mind, its 1.) drafting Boseli without a backup plan 2.) drafting Carr #1 without having a line in place 3.) the host of first day draft picks that aren't even with the team anymore... no other team has such a low success rate, and for an expansion team, that's even more detrimental to long term success. I disagree with the view that this franchise has done everything possible for this QB (or any QB) to be successful... if that's an "excuse", fine... I think its more plausible than simply "this qb sucks, lets get another one." I also think Kubiak may be on the hot seat sooner than later... not just because of his decision to keep Carr, but because his offensive game plans have been detiriorating week after week. He was clueless against the cover-2 last weekend... and he has yet to develop a consistent running game, or implement the zone blocking (which is the MOST important facet of his system... more important than which QB is throwing those 10 yard outs, or quick slants). Maybe its because the o-line is in dissaray (3 season ending injuries)... maybe its because his QB is dumber than a doornail. Only Gary knows... he better figure it out.
no, i didn't; i used roethlisberger to point out the importance of building a good team around your QB.
Now here's something we agree on. And I hope he figures it out because I really like the guy. But in addition to what you said, they can't come out so clueless in the 3rd quarter every week and continue to employ Kubiak as the head coach. I don't see in-game adjustments happening. Maybe my eye isn't trained well enough to spot them...but I'm not seeing them.
maybe i misread it...this looked like a direct comparison to me: he also didn’t turn the ball over, took just a single sack and missed an entire quarter… and they won. btw, ben roethlisberger completed less than 50% of his passes, averaged less than 6 yards an attempt, didn’t throw a TD but did throw two picks and the steelers won… the super bowl. And i’m guessing you would have traded roethlisberger for carr straight up 10 months ago, huh?
