There wasn't much said about Romo his first 2 seasons in the league, other than he kept making the team. Last year he moved up to #2 on the depth chart. This offseason Dallas gave him a contract extension and a 2+ million dollar signing bonus, so people had a good idea that they liked him and thought he was worth keeping around. Then there was the preseason game against Seattle where he started the entire game. Then Peter King started reporting that he wouldn't be suprised if Romo ended up starting this season if Bledsoe struggled. Alot of people ignored this, but for all his faults King has a pretty good relationship with Parcells. Alot more information came out after Romo took over. Things like the players not being surprised by his play because he did the same things in practice. Also that Sean Peyton tried to trade for Romo when he took over in New Orleans and before they went after Brees. So now it looks like Dallas new for the last year to year and a half that Tony Romo could be something special.
Romo seems to have developed well under the tutelage of Chris Palmer. I wonder why Carr was not been able to do the same? David "The Coach Killer" Carr
The Cowboys (and it pains me greatly to say this) were just flat out lucky that they now have Romo because they did everything they could not to find a starting caliber QB only to have one drop into their lap. They can thank Sean Peyton for finding and grooming Romo while Jerry was wasting time and money on the likes of Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchison, Drew Henson, Ryan Leaf and Drew Bledsoe. Sage is nowhere near starting QB level but then he wasn't ever supposed to be - he was to be nothing more than an insurance policy. With the asendence of Vince Young in Tennessee, the clock has run out on Carr. It's a shame because fate has not been very kind to David but that's the way it goes. He'll probably go down as another talent whose potential was squandered by an inept and stupid football organization. I see them (Texans) drafting a young QB next year to hedge their bets on Carr being the franchise. Until they do something about the lackluster play at QB, they can expect to get nothing but grief from the long suffering football fans of Houston.
this is palmer's first year in dallas. since i lived there as recently as march, i can confirm kevwun's timeline, meaning romo's development, as well as his potential, was well underway/known prior to palmer's arrival. besides, palmer also oversaw bledsoe's significant regression this year, helping pave the way for romo's ascension.
I am a Boys fan and of course pleased with Romo. But Romo is in a loaded offense backed by an excellent defense. Not to mention a jelling oline and probably the best receiving targets in the league when you consider WRs & TEs. Drew Bledsoe's recent aptitude for terrible decisions masked the very favorable situation Romo is in. I am not about to say Romo is Pro Bowl caliber QB just yet (BP called the notion ridicolous as well), I think Carr would have succeeded in Dallas.
I agree with your point but you can't forget about Vinny? Kind of a funny thing, as a fan of both the Boys and the Texans I wanted the Texans to trade Carr for Dallas pick. Then Dallas could have a younger (late 20s) and better quarterback than Bledsoe to aim to win now, and the Texans could rebuild through drafting VY with their own pick plus say Maroney/Williams/Addai with their 20ish pick acquired for Carr (or use the 20 pick for defense--Lawson/Hali and a 2nd or 3rd on scat back Mo Jones-Drew). Would have been great for the Texans, but now with Romo coming on at a fraction of the price of Carr and about the same age as him it would never happen in Dallas. Maybe it wouldn't have happened anyway (Boys probably knew what they had in Romo, I was some skeptical), but it would have been fun.
I remember a LOT of posts on this message board right before the season...while the Texans were signing Putzier and Moulds and Flanagan, saying, "Well at least Carr is out of excuses now. This should be enough to get it done."
We also thought that we'd have a decent running game just like we've had the last couple seasons. Even with DD out, most people thought that having your new regime largely from Denver would result in us not being held to 25 rushing yards a game on more than one occasion. The running game has been far more disappointing than the passing game, IMO. Regardless, you will never convince me that a journeyman backup QB would have this team anywhere other than 3-8. But seriously, this is so old that it's already more annoying than the Bush/Young/Williams debate. And this will be all we hear about until next season.
the problem to me isn't that sage wouldn't have us at a better spot...but that he couldn't have us at a much worse spot than this...after the opportunities we passed up and the cap hit we take extending dave. hard to get a running game going when your passing screens and 5 yard outs all the time. you're not really giving them a reason to do anything but stack the line.
I like having who appears could be a future Pro-Bowler in Mario Williams on defense. So, by that logic, our running game was good the last few years because of David Carr, right?
I remember a lot of posts after the Titans game that said Carr should get another chance but then if he struggles then he should be on a short leash. Yet several games later, with Carr struggling, here we are...
i do,too. i like mario a lot. our passing game wasn't nearly this contained in past years. i'm not exactly sure what's going on. i don't know if it's because kubiak doesn't trust carr to throw it down field...or if carr is trying so hard not to make mistakes that he's being too conservative...i don't know. but i know that the great passer ratings and completion percentages aren't amounting to jack diddley damn on the scoreboard. here's what i think of dave carr. he's at best a game manager. no more. he can not win a game for you...he can lose a game for you. he is accurate, but he looks uncomfortable in the pocket. to the point where i don't think he goes through progressions well. when it collapses, he very rarely has the poise to escape it, despite the fact he's an excellent athlete. he does not seem to have a good sense of things back there. i'm not saying all of this is his fault...but i've seen high school QB's with better pocket presence...yeah, i'm serious. i have. he fumbles way too much. i don't think this team would be significantly worse off without him. i think it could be much better with someone else.
What do you mean by "better spot?" You think with Sage we would be 4-7 instead of 3-8? Is that really a better spot? Do you think Carr is keeping this team from making the playoffs this year? If Carr stays in, at least we'll know by season's end whether he's the guy or not. And we can fish or cut bait instead of argue about it for another season.
i may have written that in a way that was hard to understand. i'm saying, i don't believe sage would necessarily mean more wins....though i do think we win the dolphin game with sage instead of carr. i'm saying i don't think we'd be better of with sage...but that we wouldn't be worse off, either. that's not a credit to sage, understand.
He's not struggling nearly as bad as you make him out to be and nowhere near as bad as he was in the Titans game.
