I think Coack K is finding out he can't trust Carr to be more aggressive. When Sage was in after Carr got pulled, they had an aggressive playbook. I think this off-season is going to show what exactly the priority for this franchise is. Do they want to win, or do they want Carr at the QB position no matter what.
The rushing game can't get going because we refuse to stretch the field. Teams stack the line because they can...because there's no punishment or risk to them for doing so. So of course you can't get a running game going. Denver's strength was using the passing game to open the running game. We're not doing that. Blame that on whoever you want to. But when you're completing 39 passes for 314 passes, you're gonna have a tough time backing anyone up. When your longest passing play is 22 yards from week to week, no one is dropping back. When your averaging less than 6 yards per completion, there is no threat. What's the deal with adjustments, though? Do we make any at all??? What the hell are we doing at halftime?? We get our ass handed to us every third quarter of every game. What's going on there? That's the kind of thing that gets coaches in trouble quick.
it is the most ovious position to fix on this team. It is the most important position in football, all of the good teams have QBs that are playing great, the Broncos have admitted it with Plummer, the Texans need to do the same with Carr. there will never be as good of a QB prospect as Young IMO, for this team and the situation that we had, it was the perfect scenario and we blew it. And we could have let Carr walk as a FA, clean and easy. Sign Sage or another vet and let Vince sit a yr. But that doesn't mean you don't draft a Brady Quinn or Troy Smith if given the chance. Troy may not be VY, but he is accurate, and is a leader and he can run. And Brady Quinn is the prototype of an NFL QB. Great size, strong arm, mobile. He has played in an NFL offense, and been coached by the guy who developed Tom Brady and has 4 super bowl rings. He's a 4 yr starter, he can step in and play right away, he's a bigtime player.
passing on vince young and then drafting troy smith 12 months later would add serious insult to injury.
Is Kubiak too conservative because Carr sucks, or does Carr suck because Kubiak is too conservative? Serious question. I think it's a little of both. True, it's hard to open up the offense with such a horrible O-line (we're the only team in the league to lose both starting tackles to injury) but adjustments aren't being made to counter the cover-2. There was a beautiful slant to AJ yesterday that netted 16 yards. It was a quick throw and easy catch. Why can't we do more of that? That play made Rod Smith a star in Denver back in the day. Carr has a strong enough arm to pull that off and Lord knows AJ is physical enough to catch it.
Carr's inaccuracy is not the reason. The reasons were our horrible running game which allowed NY to do a 3 man rush all day and our OL which forced us to have Carr go into 3 step drops much of the time. I'm not giving Carr a pass, just trying to analyzing it honestly instead of just reflexively blaming the QB.
Wait, you want to draft Kolb in the SECOND round?!? Sage has no accuracy in any long throws and if you're looking for more conservative stuff, that's where you start.... As for being conservative, it depends on what you guys meant with that term. Kubiak went out on a limb and went for some dangerous situations in 2 of the last 3 weeks and was 1-1 because of it. (from those 2 weeks where he took chances) He's rolled the dice often and I wouldn't call that conservative.
I never said it was the QB's fault. I said it can't be any worse. Everything else has been changed over the last 5 years - coaches, o-line, running backs, receivers, tight end. Two things have stayed the same: the QB and the fact that the offense has sucked. Why not try something different and find out if the QB is part of the problem or not? It worked for Tennessee yesterday. Their RB had 27 yards on 12 carries. When NY knew they were going to throw, they still managed to throw downfield. Sure, having a good running game helps. But at some point, the QB has to be able to do *something* without demanding a perfect line, a perfect running game, and perfect receivers. This "blame everyone but Carr" mindset is getting to be absurd.
We need a durable running back to carry the offensive load. If DD isn't healthy enough anymore then we need to draft a RB. We need a back who can grind out yards and not just fall back when hit. We need to improve the garbage riddled defensive backs. Why is it that mediocre QB play us and have monster games? We need a new kicker...preferably one with a stronger leg and costs $2million less. We need a 3rd receiver. We need to abandon the Travis Johnson Project and find a better option up the middle. Only then after we've addressed these areas can we start looking for a new QB. My guess is if Kolb is unavailable when we pick we'll stick with Carr and draft a QB next year. If DC can get any running game whatsoever, I'm telling you he's going to be good enough to take us to the playoffs. Look he's not being replaced this year because the coaching staff probably sat down and said this is a lost season. Let's see what Carr can do down the stretch. Let's determine if he's really the guy we want or if we should draft someone with our top 10 pick. Carr is good enough but I think his time is running out.
you can't continue to let opportunties to add good QB's pass you by because you need help in other areas, too.
Things could definitely be worse. Aaron Brooks could be our QB. Or Jake Plummer. And it is misleading to say things have changed over the last 5 years. Basically, things changed once, this year. The first 4 years were consistently bad coaches and O- Line. Carr did do *something.* He has been completing a high percentage of passes and limiting his turnovers. He has been finding AJ and Moulds many times per game. He has mixed in some smart runs. Carr is not perfect, but people want to scapegoat him instead of looking at the whole team.
No. Carr defenders assume that those who are critical of Carr are ONLY looking at Carr as the problem. That's not the case. I'm critical of Carr. I recognize there are other reasons why we're losing as well. We have, at best, a game manager in Carr. That's fine if you have a team that can win with a game manager. The Texans don't. They used a #1 pick and tons of cash on a guy who at best, won't lose you games....but won't win you game, either. The offense isn't scoring. It's not getting the job done. On every other team in the league, Carr would already be on the bench. Here, he's given the benefit of the doubt constantly. It's never his fault. He has been benched once in his time here...he hasn't been held accountable. Completing a high percentage of passes yesterday for less than 6 yards per completion isn't helping much. It's not opening up a running game, and it's clearly not putting points on the board. I'm with Major. What do you have to lose??? Try Sage. Just see what happens.
Who cares if we had Jake Plummer? The offense isn't scoring right now. Is it really any worse to lose 20-0 instead of 20-7? Why are people so afraid to find out if Carr is a part of the problem? [/quote] The entire rest of the team is constantly being changed. Coaches have been fired. The GM has been fired. The entire roster has been constantly remade. The only thing that is NOT being looked at is the QB. Carr did very little this game. Half of his yards came on the last 2 drives once the game was over. He completed a bunch of passes that NY wanted him to complete. 3rd and 3? He completed a 2 yard pass. Multiple times. (including twice when he got a 2nd chance due to a fluke replay) He led his team to 3 points when the game mattered. Last week, he had a fantastic running game and completed 22 straight passes - and led his team to a whole 2 scores! That's him at his very best. In the second half, I think all but two of his passes went 5 yards or less. Completing a bunch of short passes that don't lead to scores is worthless.
I was responding to your point that things couldn't be worse. They could be worse. I agree that we have to find out if Carr can be a QB. But you find out if Carr is part of the problem by playing him, not by benching him. What do you mean the rest of the team is constantly being changed? Before this year there wasn't much change at all. Capers and Casserly filled the team with crappy talent and had one bad draft after another. It's not like Carr doesn't want to go downfield. The problem was NY could put out a 3 man rush with our terrible runninggame and on top of that Carr had to get rid of the ball quickly. That results in a lot of short passes. I understand Carr didn't play all that well, but there were a lot of things going wrong.
Tough to not be/look conservative when the offense sucks At this point it cant hurt to give Sage the ball for the rest of the season. The one game he was given a shot, he seemed to play pretty well from what I remember. VInce is looking awfully good...and its not like the Titans are so much more talented than the Texans... Texans have many problems...might as well start with switching QBs and go from there.
I don't see the point in trying Sage. He is no more than a game manager and probably worse. Better to keep throwing David Carr out there and see if he can start reaching his potential. At this point, I'm not ready to say Carr is just a game manager who would be on the bench for every other team. I am willing to give him the rest of the year to see what happenes. If he continues mediocre play then you look into bringing someone in who will compete for the job next year.
Egad. We need an OL that can run block and give whoever is the RB 3 yards a carry to start. We also need a OL who can pass block a 3/4 man rush, so the QB is not looking to dump the ball asap. The Texans are so drafting in the first round of next draft the highest rated OL.
i'm suggesting that if other teams struggled to score as much as we do, their QB would be on the bench.
