I'm coming late to this thread but I'm not sure there's enough here to call this as a case of religious bias against Islam as much as it is not wanting to have an institution that brings in a lot of traffic and other potential problems completely apart from the religion. It also sounds like a basic property dispute between a private residential landowner versus a larger development While I'm not sure Baker is being truthful when he says KIA has told him to move, I'm sure he probably feels threatened that the KIA might want to buy him out or compel him to move by developing around him.

While Baker is acting like a jerk in his attempt to annoy the Muslims I have to agree that its his property and he should be able to do what he wants.

Every major (and minor) religion has the same problem regarding interpretation. IMO. There's no doubt that the founding fathers were really conflicted about the idea of religion, including some of the most famous and respected viewing it as essentially rediculous. That they came together to create the foundation of our government despite this reflects their collective genius.

That's why it really pisses me off when we see a collection of chumps like the Bush Administration and the outgoing GOP Congress crap all over it. In my opinion.

you honestly believe if they were building a church in Katy there'd be this uproar...and deliberate attempts to offend the church members to "welcome" them??

^ I'm sure it being a mosque has something to do with their animosity but that article also cited concerns about traffic and drainage so I'm sure some of their concerns have to do ingeneral with having a large religious institution move in as much as what type of religious institution. That said I'm not aware of polling data conducted on why they don't want a mosque there.

^ However, the lack of an uproar over the guy's response to this is probably just as telling. You're citing traffic as a concern but the guy is using religion in the response. I'm not even sure what would be the comparable insult to Christianity (upside-down cross, Satanic masses?) but I'm sure it wouldn't be overlooked like this.

I just don't recall an outcry like this when 2nd Baptist built their gigantic satellite facility right on the other side of the street from another Katy neighborhood.

No doubt it has a lot to do with it being a Muslim place of worship versus a Christian one.

No need to hide that fact.

But, if you move to an area that has predominantly one sect, you have to be prepared for backlash.

Yeah...we should expect discrimination and intimidation in this country, huh? We should expect it...in fact, we should congratulate it and celebrate it.

Give me a break...making excuses for a guy intentionally trying to offend a religious group to keep them from building near you is crap.

How much of an outcry is this generating in the Houston area? Is this story a major news story or just a public interest story involving one kook and his pig races?

I'm not saying you're wrong but from the original article posted it didn't seem like religious bias was the motivating factor. It sounded like typical NIMBY with a twist that one of the land owners had a wacky idea to piss off the new neighbors.

    ^ MadMax;

I will have to defer to you on this one because I'm too far removed from the area to be able to get a sense of what opinions are there.

There was actually a good bit of outcry from the church's new neighbors. The residents wanted them to try & save as many of the trees on that parcel of land as possible, Ed Young, Inc. basically told 'em to kiss off & they'd do what they want (which equated to cutting down virtually *all* the trees).

There were no religion-based attempts to intimidate & offend, of course, so the situations aren't completely relatable.

For the record, I am not defending him, just saying he has the right to be a jerk.....

    Free speech.......

And I was pointing out that backlash is going to happen....they should be prepared for it......not condoning it....pointing it out.

I mean what did the people of the mosque think was going to happen when they bought that land? Did they honestly think neighbors would be happy about it?

There are a lot of old Anglican church's being bought over in the UK and a lot of backlash is happening there too as they are being converted into Mosques.

    People don't like change......

The things people say at the end are far scarier than pig races.
