I DID. Check it, please. I was confused why you were quoting someone WONDERING instead of an actual FACT. "The sky is blue right now". Would you quote that as true? Ok. "I wonder if the sky is blue right now" <- why would you quote THAT. for. truth. Why do I have to explain to you a question I make? You actually think that teams LOSE games because the kicker can't make 2 field goals? Historically, that DOESN'T happen. Last night, the TITANS ran all over the field, controlled the clock, and sacked the quarterback enough times to make him wonder about the timing of his throws. How many times did the Texans sack the quarterback or put pressure on him? Do you want to keep stats on the "hurries" and "batted balls", too?
they did it to make it as easy as possible. distance isn't a problem for a kicker like kris. so they lined it up...straight on... and he failed to hit even the net behind the goal posts.
You did not. You found *one* game. One. There was a lot of truth in his musing. There's a lot of drivel in your hair splitting, though. PROVE IT. As a matter of fact, teams lose or win games ALL THE TIME because the kicker hit or missed one last field goal at the end of the game. For your own reference, since you seemed determined for some reason to only examine Brown and Bironas, witness the two most recent Texans losses. It's simple man: spot the other team six points, and it's harder to win. I can't believe anyone needs this explained to him. And with all that, the Texans could have won 27-24. It's not a hard concept to grasp, Swoly. Not hard at all.
nope; no way - no. no. no. you're set-up for a 49-yard FG; you don't risk that dropping matt schaub back to pass - here's everything that could go wrong: a penalty; a sack; a fumble; an interception; you could lose yards on the play; you could use up all the available time... those risks far outweigh, exponentially, the ever-so slight (if that) possibility of winning the game from 32 yards away. you can find a lot of things to gripe about last night, i guess - but they handled the final drive perfectly.
MOST games in which a kicker misses 2 or more field goals (Kris Brown, Rob Bironas, because that's whom I researched) are won. Only 2 out of 5 were lost. Give me some more names and I will give you THEIR stats. THAT is what you were missing from the "truth" you quoted. "AT THE END OF THE GAME", sir. The first question in mind was "how many games are lost because of two missed field goals." That was covered. Now, AT THE END OF THE GAME is different.
right -- I'm still pulling for him to turn it around. He's been among the best in the game for 8 years. Mr. Automatic. Here's hoping he returns to form. Immediately. Your sample size is as ridiculous as this statement. I'll give you some names: NFL KICKERS. You don't spot the other team 6 points and expect to win. Can it really be that hard of a concept to grasp??
Fine, I won't argue that you don't risk a deep drop and a pass into coverage, but come up with something better than a QB dive (since we had a timeout left). Even a run with Slaton is a better option than that. But we've got the best receiver in the game and a couple of great hands guys in Walter and DA going against a weak secondary, so I'm going to take a shot to at THE VERY LEAST cut the length of that field goal down. Especially when your kicker has already missed a similar field goal and lost the last game missing a kick. A three step drop at the most and a quick hit to one of those guys, and if it isn't there have a checkdown available. 8 seconds is more than enough time to get that done. I think we could've easily cut the length by 8-10+ yards, and who knows, maybe someone makes a play and scores.
I've liked Kris a lot, my wife wears his jersey. But a kicker's career in the NFL is built on game winners. That's two games straight (and not the only ones in his Texans tenure) that he's blown it. Missing a 50-yarder is understandable. But Missing it badly to the side when lined up dead center? That's troubling. That has to give you pause. I love him a lot, but replacing kickers, especially non-HOF kickers, isn't a daunting task in this league. How screwed were the Pats when they let Vinatari go? How screwed were the Saints when their kicker was suspended to start the season? Like Kris a lot, but this is a game very often decided by 3 points or less, and he left 6 on the field last night. Evan
Far from Knee-jerk. I understand the fondness towards the longest tenured guy - I also understand the blinders that usually come hand in hand with such fondness. He is having a horrible season, that can not be overlooked. I use "We" because I'm a fan. As a "Rowdy4Life", I'd think you would understand that concept.
That's no excuse though. Kris Brown is payed to make a field goal (1.4 million dollars, to be exact), whether he expects the coach to call a timeout or not. He still goes about the kick the same way. Last night, he clearly was affected by Fisher NOT calling a timeout, yes. Should he have been? HELL NO. That alone is a sign to me that the guy is no longer clutch. Two games in a row you have a chance to keep your team's season going, and you blow it? To me, you should be gone. The NFL is a cutthroat league - you're payed to perform. Brown is not performing. As much as I like the guy, I think he needs to go. Like others have said, you can have a new kicker in, and ready to go within 2 or 3 days, if that.
Speaking of players who "have to go". What do you guys think is going to happen to Dunta? Franchise-n-trade? I can't see the Texans forking out the money he wants after this craptastic year.
I think he's kind of written his own ticket out. Hopefully there are some good corners in the draft...
yeah, i hate to overreact but damn...2 games in a row. What really sucks is that he has been so good for this team. When they showed kris before the kick he had a bit of a wide eyed look on his face...i said to myself "oh no...that doesn't look good"
That's asinine. Most NFL games between good opponents are close games. It is reasonable to expect your kicker to make two sub 50 yard field goals in perfect weather conditions.
Defense did a pretty decent job last night. As a matter of fact, they were handed a short field on one occasion after the kicker missed a FG. Nice scarecrow, though. Now, care to answer the question?
