Sorry, AB...friend or not she just ain't that talented. Sam Malone is what makes that show go (not that I listen to it that much). I thought Stevens and Pruitt were bad but their replacements are horrible. os
If you say the call letters KRBE as a word it comes out as "Kirby" as in the street in Houston. That was what the station was named after. Also, does anyone (who is old enough) remember when KRBE did Classic Rock on 1070AM?
Do you remember when KRBE used to broadcast the Astros games? A buddy of mine does...he used to go in the copter and do the traffic reports. They cut him off to go to the game one day.
No, never been much into the 'stros. I'm sure that I would have flipped the dial if a game had come on, but I don't recall that anyway. FWIW, I do recall listening to Peterson on AM radio...'Malone has the ball again...and...TWOOOOOOOOooooooooo!!!'
you do realize the word "pop" comes from the word "popular" right??? pop basically means top 40...whatever is hot at the time...or, some might say, whatever is "popular" at the time. as we grow up, we often find that popular music of the day is less attractive, though we liked the popular music of the day 10 years ago.
The overall direction of this thread is a long-needed subject...why Houston radio sucks! I recently visited cities such as Austin, Las Vegas and Los Angeles and can honestly say that Houston radio as a whole does not come close to matching the variety and quality of these cities. It is very difficult to find "ultra-"alternative stuff (outside of KTRU) and it's hard to find any non-country stations (pop and rap) that will play anything other than the current top ten singles. I like a wide variety of music...rap, old school rap, reggae, alternative, 80's, dance/trance/electronica, punk and zydeco...but it is hard to find any station that will play any tracks from most of the groups listed above (excluding rap and alternative). In Hawaii, they have a radio station (or maybe it's a statewide network) called RadioFreeHawaii...people are allowed to vote on what they want to hear and that's it. Granted, you are going to hear a significantly different mix there (local Hawaiian flavor, reggae, current R&B hits) than you would here, but Houston lacks good radio stations that "damn The Man" and play what people like to hear. Now I understand that advertising dollars generally run these stations and a great assumption (and probably correctly so) is made that more people will listen to what is currently popular, but I can probably accurately guess that most people listen to stations in Houston (like KRBE) only because there is no better alternative. Do I have an answer...not really...I know the system will not change. I guess I probably should just subscribe to XM satellite radio. Sound off over!
I thought Walton and Johnson were pretty bad a first, but then I listened to them some, and they kind of grew on me. Once you figure out that one guy is doing three of the voices on the show, you realize how talented they are... Sam Malone can be really funny, but he can be really sappy, also...Maria Todd just needs to get laid... Speaking of Stevens and Pruitt, does anybody know where I can find some of those old Uncle Waldo skits? They weren't funny very often, but when they were....
i'm guilty of making fun of celebrities i don't know...people i don't know...i see now why i shouldn't do that...(as if i shouldn't have seen that before!!!) i've had the pleasure of meeting maria todd on numerous occassions, and i can say she is extremely kind and a lot of fun to be around.
Seeing the old 93Q being brought up rehashes some good memories. Does anyone else remember the 93Q-Zone every night, where they played the club music/Numbers set lists? (Posie Noirre- Pity for thyself/ White Rabbit/ People are still Having Sex/ Rigamortis, etc...) I was digging through some old boxes a while back and found about 20 tapes I had recorded back in high school. I used to live for those shows while partying or studying! I really wish we'd get another 106.9 station back in this town...nothing but hard rock and aggressive metal! Once that station disappeared, I gave up on Houston radio.
They WERE bad at first. I listened to them back when they were in New Orleans, and they were much better. Immediately after they moved to Houston, they tried to conform their show ... so bad that I almost had to stop listening. Personally, I like to listen to some intelligent talk (don't confuse this with talk that you disagree with)
KRBE is bad. Really bad. It's rare that I hear anything interesting anymore. When I even bother trying. It was decent about the time that the Buzz first came into existence. But it was already leaning hard toward the pop-watered down club stuff at the time. It finally went all the way not long after. I do remember when I used to listen to 104 with some regularity, back when they played stuff closer to what the Buzz does now. Ah well.....XM is looking better and better now anyway.
I would say around 10 years ago. At about 94-95, was when the changed to what i previously mentioned. For example, if you look at the charts 10 years ago I would say the only played the following: Nirvana Spin Doctors Genesis U2 Pearl Jam Red Hot Chili Peppers While today, the would even probably be playing the whole chart even Billy Ray Cyrus.
again...when those bands were selling top 40 records, they were being played by KRBE...simply because those were top 40 records and they hit their demographic. a year or so back KRBE was playing "Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters...amidst other pop music. KRBE hasn't changed...Top 40 has changed.
Having not listened to enough radio outside Houston....does being 'Top 40' mean you play everything in the Top 40? I think that's what they are talking about. I really don't know. Regardless, for me personally it seems like whatever they cover in the 'Top 40' is among the worst. I really rarely hear a single song I'd stop and listen to. And, looking at Billboard charts, there's quite a few of the top albums out now that I'd like to buy. So it can't be that my music tastes are radically different....
again...it's not just top 40...it's top 40 that hits their target market, which is females from 18 (or younger)-30...if you don't like it...and i usually don't like it...you switch the channel. i'm not in their target demographic at all...but when you listen to who their advertisers are, you realize they must be doing their job pretty well.
I Im not listening to a cd, and I have the radio on, it stays on The Buzz. They are by far the best station in Houston and the only one that plays New Rock that nobody here has heard of yet. KRBE blows.
My main beef with KRBE is their mix. For example, you will hear Britney, Dr. Dre, and Vertical Horizon one after another. It's a top 40 hits station so I guess they'll play whatever is popular. I guess I have a different definition for pop music. I wouldn't considered N.O.R.E as pop, but KRBE plays it cause its popular.
