The show always had a few racial stereotypes that bugged some Americans. Not saying it wasn't brilliant overall, but not surprised that it might have been the product of opinions held by the cast. After all, they are white people
That smacks of some kind of mental disorder. I'm not condoning it at all; that was really horrible. It comes off like someone who has bipolar disorder.
It sounds like he just lost it and was trying to be offensive back to the people being offensive to him. He stepped over the line...way over. DD
yea . . he did I mean seriously. . .you are a professional comedian and he acts like he has never been heckled? he offended me and I ain't done nothing to him I mean . . . Seriously . . I generally liked Seinfeld and will probably not watch it as much from now on it is tainted Rocket River
Sheesh, I'm kind of hoping that whole thing was an Andy Kaufman-like gag and the hecklers were in on it.....but I don't think so. Agree with Dada ( ). Richards was probably really pissed and couldn't think of anything else to say to get back at those guys. So he started saying things that were REALLY stupid and inappropriate
I found it funny that half the crowd began to leave in the middle of his tirade. If something like that happened if I was in the audience, I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. The announcer at the end was also funny.
That's what I was hoping too. Seems totally out of character. If you own any of the season box sets, he is totally different from the Kramer character. Very serious, very humble in a lot of respects. It's a shame that he has fallen so far. There's still hope it was some Kaufman joke gone bad, but I'm thinking he just lost it.
I don't care if you're going for some Andy Kaufman thing (which he pretty clearly wasn't, you dreamers), it's still ****ing awful to raise the specter of LYNCHING to a black man. I mean, Jesus!
I wonder if this had been eating at him... "Richards was also slated to star as the title character in the USA series Monk, but pulled out of the project. The role later went to Tony Shalhoub, who would go on to win three Emmy awards, two SAG awards, and a Golden Globe for his role." Wiki He should have just retired...
I don't see what the big deal is. Kenny Banya was scheduled to go on next and Kramer was throwing the set.
I have the Sienfeld dvd and he takes his job very seriously. When other cast members would goof their lines he would get pissed. He said something about taking a 2x4 to Julia Louis Dreyfus' head at one point but nobody really heard him. In an interview he admitted that he probably should of lightened up and had more fun while filming. And on the Friday's thing with Andy Kaufman, I don't know if he was in on it or not. I don't think he was. He was pissed and got up and grabbed the cue cards. I would like to know if he was really in on it or not. The guy is strange imo, but that's what make him a comedian. I think he has a temper and told those guys off in a way in which he thought would hurt them most. I doubt be believes in a superior race etc. It was stupid though.
I'll have to go back and check Bob Zmuda's book about Kaufman, but I believe he wrote in there that Richards was in on the gag. As was Jack Burns, the director of Fridays who attacked Kaufman on live TV.
It has to kill him that his career has gone nowhere since Seinfeld. The heckler was right. He's turned into Don Knotts.
