KPJ being out this long...planned? Rockets wanted to see Sengun in the role they always envisioned?

Will be going to the game against the Spurs on Saturday night - if KPJ is back and playing I am going to be the Australian causing a riot outside the AT&T Centre (because just lol at thinking I’m going back to the joke of an experience the Toyota Centre is)

he has 4 more games to sit to unlock an additional 4m in cap space, due to some obscure rules....so I expect he will get those 4 games sat.....something about it turns one of the things on his contract from likely to unlikely......

It doesn't effect his guaranteed money at all, but it is the way his contract is counted against the cap that counts.

    this is fact?

I read an article about the cap nuances effected through breadth of Nets/Kyrie swap, and all the teams rolled into it.

I thought I had a greater handle on NBA CBA. And yet child’s play v NFL CBA.

The Rockets don't seem like an organization that is nuanced enough to pull this off. It's complete disarray from the top down.

But then again, leave it to Tillman to keep as much money in his own hands as possible.

Silas knows the fans and national media LOVE Sengun but he is planning to bench Sengun till the end of the year. If you notice last game, Sengun was heading toward a triple double(17-10-5) until he just shut him down in the 4th quarter. Silas hates Sengun! Now he is signing Willie Cayley Stein to take Sengun minutes…we are suppose to develop our young guys for next year and this guy is trying to win……but he cannot win……and he is trying to?
I know his boy Porter will be coming back soon and Jalen. so he will try to win. I wanted to keep Silas so he can help us with our TANKING this year and he is doing a GREAT job but he is not developing Sengun, Jabari or TyTy at all.

According to Spotrac ( https://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-rockets/kevin-porter-jr-31589/) KPJ has a $2.379M incentive in his contract for 2023 - 2024 for playing 60 or more games. It is currently considered "Likely to be achieved" since he played in 61 games the season before he signed the extension. This is recomputed annually before the season starts, and is normally based on what you did the previous year with limited exceptions such as a major injury, or if your team gets substantially better or worse. Key is that a "likely to be achieved" bonus counts against your available salary cap room in free agency/trades, while an "unlikely to be achieved" bonus does not.

Larry Coon's old CBA FAQ has details on likely to be earned contract bonuses and how they are calculated: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q74

Kelly Olynyk had a $1M yearly bonus for reaching 1700 minutes played per season. When they traded for him in 2021, he was at 1157 minutes total. They could have saved $1M by shutting him down, especially since he was a pending free agent, instead they let him play a career high in minutes and showcase himself so he was actually able to secure a raise in a free agent deal. So in a similar situation, the Rockets did not pinch pennies. If there were LT savings involved, perhaps it would have been different.

The Rockets under Eli Witus in 2019-2020 navigated the Nene contract that abused the "Likely"/"Unlikely" designations, and had a threshold of 10(!) games played before a $2.5M guarantee kicked in. I have some degree of confidence that the institutional knowledge remains in the building for how to take advantage of the rule.[/QUOTE]
