I was in Shanghai, I was surfing and downloading things at speeds that I found to be fine. It's not like we have 20 down and 10 up everywhere stateside either.
I travel all over China, Korea, U.S. and Canada for work. I visit websites, download from torrent sites, p2p, etc. No matter how you put it, it's not even close. It's not unbearably slow, but it is slow compared to the above countries. The only places where i have experienced slower speeds were in India, Kenya and Tanzania.
I live in Shanghai. I'm not saying the speeds aren't fine. I'm saying compared to Korea, U.S. (everywhere i've been anyway) etc it is slow.
I'm still not sure if we're talking about the same thing. Unless you actually download LOCAL Chinese, Japanese, and Canadian things at these respective countries. For example, have you ever tried to download Chinese movies in China using Chinese bittorrent softwares? Or do you download American(or even Chinese) stuff in China using western bittorrent softwares? Performance differences are quite big.
I hope we are talking about the same thing . And I do agree with you that it is faster when downloading chinese content from chinese sites. However it is still not as fast.
Dont see how faster speed wont contribute to more piracy. But then faster internet speed might actually take away from pirates instead of the content producers. Rather than buying a bootleg dvd for 50 cents you just watch it online you werent gonna pay for original stuff anyway.
China Telecom is spending alot of money to get fibre to everyone's house in the city. Be patient, you only have about 1 billion people ahead of you in line.
Hardly true. I think China only have about 400-500 million people in the cities and those include small cities. Shanghai is the #1 city on the list to get fiber, so he is way in the front of the pack.
Well, it's easy for a small country, like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc, to build up such infrastructure, not like in US.
I've had no problem downloading stuff in China. Infact, Chinese torrents easily hit 200 Kb/s. Also, I think for the price (equivalent to about 20 bux a month) it's head and shoulders better than the 20 dollar DSL.
