yeah, over the backboard shouldnt be 2 points. if bird couldnt get that shot to count i dont know why they would allow kobe to. f- the nba.
This was pretty much what I thought when I saw it. I've actually made similar, behind the backboard shots in pick-up games before...of course the NBA is a different story....
most skilled in the nba, sorry lebron you can have most athletic and espn ofcourse to hold your balls....but you can't dispute kobe is not the most skilled
I think they changed the rule. It used to be out of bounds whenever a rebound went over and behind the backboard, and now I think they only call that out if it hits the shot clock.
It was my understanding if it went over the backboard it didn't count. Am I apparently mis-interpreting the rule?
I don't know the ruling but I think it should count. I mean if you shoot a three from the very corner then you're behind the basket as well but I would think the shot would count.

Shooting over the backboard is not a very hard shot. Sure, he was getting bumped, but he gets bumped taking shots in front of the backboard and makes those too.
C'mon, you guys never hit a shot like that playing pick up ball? After seeing Bird do it for the first time, I would try to do it any time I would be in a position that would let me shoot behind the backboard. I'm sure a couple times I forced myself to shoot that shot.
you can shoot shots over the backboard now. rebounds can also go over the backboard as well, however if it touches the top of the backboard as it is going over, then it is called out of bounds.
So your evidence that it's not a hard shot is a single video from roughly 25 years ago where one of the best players to ever play happened to make a similar shot... Sorry to break it to you, but you're not supporting your own point very well. Plus, if you look closely you'll notice that Kobe also jumped off the "wrong" foot. Even more difficult.
No... the video and the complaint have nothing to do with one another. People brought up Bird's shot, so I posted the vid so people could watch it. My evidence for knowing it isn't a hard shot is that I've shot it hundreds of times. Once, I won a bet for hitting an over-the-backboard shot, not from the baseline, but from a good 20 feet behind. Shooting from the baseline is not hard. So, he got bumped, which happens when he shoots from the paint. He jumps off the wrong foot, which I'm sure occasionally happens shooting from the paint. Big deal. Can I shoot over the backboard on the go, shooting off the wrong foot, while an NBA player was body-checking me out of bounds? No, but most NBA players should be able to. Btw, does anyone have a link to something that says the rule was changed? I'm not finding anything.
haha, well being pushed and looking for a foul jumping off the wrong leg out of bounds? Don't forget kobe's a leftie foot jumper and that was his right leg. I think may take you more than 3 because if you could make that same shot at roughly the same clip as kobe you'd be right where he is.
Yesterday morning after my workout I was shooting some baskets waiting for the misses to get out when I noticed this guy at the other end of the court shooting from behind the backboard. FOR 10 MINUTES! I never saw him make one but maybe it is becoming part of a players repertoire.
