I hate when people say stuff like this because it is physiologically impossible. He could have put on 10-15 pounds, but it's not all muscle. 5 to 7 pounds of muscle in 3 months is amazing, 10-15 pounds of muscle is not possible unless Kobe is hitting the sauce.

I believe that after getting constantly knocked around by the dirty play of the Pistons' bad boys, Jordan decided to bulk up and hooked up with now renowned trainer, Tim Grover. I'm sure he bulked up again after his 1st retirement too, when he decided to rely on more of a midrange and post game rather than his original, more of a slashing mentality.

Generally, I haven't really seen Kobe getting pushed around, so I don't know how necessary it was for him to gain that amount of weight for a 7 game span. 10-15 pounds (or 5-7 pounds Rocketspimp :)) of muscle is a lot of weight to put on in such a short span. Kobe's going to not only have to get used to carrying around the extra baggage, but he's going to have to be aware of how it affects his quickness/speed. As I said before, Jerry Rice did the same thing, but was disappointed with the amount of quickness/speed he lost as a result.

Kobe has been on Mike's jockstrap ever since he came into the L. You ever notice he tries to run like Mike, he tries to kick out his leg when he shoots a fadeaway, he tries to dress like Mike after and before the games, heck, he even tries to chew his gum like Mike.... Who am I to say to say that trying to be like Mike is wrong, I know I used to think I could be Mike, but there is a big difference between wishful thinking and an identity crisis. Kobe (in Hank Hill's words) needs to find his own "lawn". Kobe needs help.

    Exactly Truth.

Shaq may be out, but Bavetta is still in the league, isn't he? He's bound to ref one of those first 7 games, making 0-7 unlikely.

Hey, whatever....put Kobe at the 3 position, and the deadeye rookie Kareem Rush can man the shooting guard. Added weight or not, Kobe will still dominate at the SF spot.

Why does everyone use Jerry Rice as the only example? What happened to Mike's quickness and overall game after he put on the weight?

Jordan relied more on his post game and midrange game to compensate for his quickness. Also, Mike didn't put on 10-15 pounds of muscle in a mere 3 months. There's a big difference when you're carrying that much extra baggage, especially since he put it all on in such a short span. From the articles and segments here and there I've seen on Tim Grover's training regimen, I don't believe that the program advocates such a drastic change. Again, I stress that nowhere did I say that the added weight will have a negative effect on Kobe. I simply stated that Kobe has to be aware of how the extra baggage affects his quickness/speed. Jerry Rice is the most recent example of an athlete putting on too much muscle, and having to slim back down.

that 10-15 lbs. was simply an embellishment in a casual interview by Jackson. Probably just another Zen mind trick from the master.

I guess Kobe wants to be more effective in the post. I have no idea if this will mess with his quickness because if I remember correctly Kobe lost 10-15 pounds from that food poisoning incident during the playoffs.

Bryant showed up for media day 15 pounds heavier, with much of the muscle on his chiseled upper arms. Part of his workout routine involved boxing, although he said he didn't allow his sparring partner to take any shots at his head.

``The goal was to just get stronger,'' he said. ``This summer I was completely healthy, so I was able to push myself pretty hard.''

I think you need help more than Kobe, for caring if Kobe is/or wants to be like MJ.

    Not necessarily...

It's not like Kobe doesn't have access to the world's best trainers, as well as nutritionists.
