    Very cool.
(In b4 someone says Kobe did it for the publicity.)

"Donate" doesn't seem like quite the right word. But, it was a funny experience to go from a feel-good headline to a pretty depressing article.

    * It's a playoff pool, not Kobe's money
    * He only cut in 2 guys when 20 people got laid off
    * It's not like the other workers just weren't close to the players; laid-off trainers were left in the cold
    * Crappy that the Lakers are even laying these folks off because of the lockout in the first place

Misleading thread title -- Kobe didnt donate the money to the employees the Lakers org did. Kobe AND Fisher voted to give some of the payout to those two employees. The original article itself from the la times is title "lakers donate part of playoff bonus.."

While its a great gesture nonetheless by the players to have those two guys voted in its not like Kobe or Fisher gave up any of his own earned money to the guys he just was happy with a smaller share of the playoff pool or gave up a bonus. Still a nice gesture but still sucks that they were laid off one of the persons was with the team for 25 years since he was a ball boy...you would think teams or league would have some sort of plan to help out their employees during an extended lockout instead of just laying them off. Its not like all of these employees were making millions I am sure some were paid well enough to whether a work stoppage for a little bit but an entire season + will be tough on anyone.

Seems like the one that actually should be commended the most is Luke Walton for paying out of his own money to the trainers and all. Of course Luke has been stealing money from the Lakers the last 2-3 seasons anyway so it probably doesnt matter to him so much.

The playoff money would go into Kobe's pockets and he voted to give it to the laid off guys. How is that not donating?

The thread title made it seem like a personal donation, which is a little misleading if everyone on the team is giving up a share of their earnings.

Kobe didn't donate any money. He lessened what was going to be handed out to other players/staff.

If there was a specified amount to go to each players, and Kobe said, give mine to the guys you laid off, that would be different.

I'd agree with Superbee, it's their money which they chose to give to the two employees.

Awesome gesture from Kobe. Bad move by Kobe lockout wise. Thats Buss's job to pay his taff. Is that how he rewards 10 years of loyalty? The more people that are against the owners, the better for the players.

It's hard for me to look past all the douchey things Kobe does on and off the court (mostly on it, where he's such an arrogant, whiny dickwad), but I can't knock him for this. Even though it wasn't really just his decision, and whether or not he had some publicity in mind, it was still a cool thing to do.

The chick bragged about it afterwards .......

I'm not saying that rape is a woman's fault, 99.99% time the BS excuse about the girl leading the guy on is false, but the Kobe's case really seems like a girl wanted it, then regret it.

Also, it's been 3 years, let it go.

Actually each player and coach and some of the trainers do all get equal shares. All teams operate like this. Kobe did give his personal portion of his playoff share.

What they dont say is that every team that makes the playoffs does this. Some teams/players are more generous then others but this is not a rare gesture. This happens for every team, players give portions of their playoff bonus to the support staff.
