Truly bizarre. I enjoy watching sports and it's great entertainment but that's all. I feel bad when guys get serious injuries or my team loses but not to the point where I can't function or it messes with my life. It's weird seeing grown men break down over other men that have no connection to them and will never personally know them.

"Next time your old man can't pay the rent, have him call Mickey Mantle and see what he says. Mickey doesn't care about you, why do you care about him?"

    Pretty much sums it up

I also think it comes form those who truly, truly love the game. This Kobe injury hits pretty big, like there is a potential for this injury to end the Kobe era of basketball. If you take a step back, you can really see how huge this is. I watched the game last night to see if the Warriors would lose that way we could not lose ground going for 6th, and after the 2nd time he got hurt, you got a whiff of something bad going down. It is hard to explain but following the game for so long, to see something like that go down, it kinda hits you. I didn't cry or anything even close for that matter, but it was weird to me when I was at the court practicing. Hard to explain. If Harden went down, I would be extremely bummed, like any tweaked ankle, I kinda gasp and pray it isn't something serious.

You yourself have over 3,000 posts on a sports team site in a little over a year. Its following the product and cursing at the bad performances for SOME reason.

Pretending that there isnt any attachment element beyond JUST the product on the court would be disingenuous.

Add MUTOMBO to that. Its seeing the abrupt painful end of a player's career, passion and dream.

Do you see a 15 year player and ambassador to the sport go down and think "PFFT, whatever it happens. Chuck Hayes can step in" ?

NBA players are the most visibly accessible of the major sports, and probably the most star driven of them. Which can mean you "relate" more

Sports is tribalism. Our tribe verses your tribe. It's a very powerful instinct.

This. Those people need to man up, get some perspective and get a life. Stop living vicariously through your sports idols...it makes you look stupid. Yeah, Kobe's injury is unfortunate and even I felt bad for him despite me hating on him (mainly due to his attitude) earlier in his career. But at the end of the day, NBA basketball is only a game meant to entertain its fans.

I also think there's a difference between "fan" and "fanatic". "Fan" = the person likes whatever it is they're a fan of and keeps up with it to a reasonable degree without going overboard. This is fine...good even; most sane people are fans of something. "Fanatic" = the person is obsessed with the thing or entity and damn near drinks and breathes it...such people are typically misguided, usually weird and sometimes borderline creepy.

We're probably the wrong place to accuse people of living vicariously through their sports idol, what with all the recent r****ds we got...
