Anyone listen to 610AM in Houston yesterday. Around 9:00pm they had a famous jeweler (sp?) on. He said a normal (white diamond) 8 carrot diamond would be around $30-40 thousand dollars. Because its purple, the price tag on that thing would be around $2.5 MILLION! Purple is the third rarest color for a diamon. Red and blue being the top two. Also said that Kobe got ripped off big time. The ring is worth maybe $3-3.25 million at the most. Went on to say that what would any jewelery store owner do if he saw Kobe Bryant walk into the store, knowing he had to make up to his wife no matter the cost. There are only a few purple diamonds that size in the entire world. Kobe's had to be cut especially from a mine in Belgium. So its not like Kobe had time to shop around. The owner of the store proably made at least $750,000 on the ring. Of course the reason got a purple ring is because its the color of the Lakers and his jersey number is 8, thus the 8 carot diamond. Kobe just better be glad he doesn't play for the Magic or Bulls. And that he doesn't wear number 23. A blue or red 23 carrot diamond would even put a hole in his fat wallet!
