I'm sure that he would have had the surgery done on that pinkie finger during this current offseason if it wasn't for the Olympics. I do think that the decision he's making at this time to not have the surgery might come to haunt him during the course of the upcoming regular season if he does too much more damage to it. We're really talking about a whole 82-game season ahead of him playing with that damaged pinkie finger that he injured early last February.

Kobe and the Lakers would be better off if he only missed just the first month of the upcoming season rather than miss three months. Oh, well, I think that Kobe feels that missing just one month of the season would cost the Lakers a spot in the playoffs, which is just why he wouldn't have surgury on that pinkie at the time he injured it--team would miss the playoffs last season rather than end up playing the Celtics for the championship.

Battier needs to knock him over and Artest needs to tread on said pinkie.

I dont care how we get out of the West. Long as we do.

Smart move by Kobe! This basically give him a very good excuse should the Lakers fail to meet the offseason expectations!

imo bad decision on his part, i remember him mentioning that the first 3 fingers are the trigger for the shot but iono if he does injure himself more severely.. ehh there goes the season for the lakers. honestly i think he should have gotten it done AS SOON AS the Olympics were over. he waited til now to get opinions? his career/future.

I have a very heavy feeling that this little pinkie gonna cost too much to Kobe .

I just dont understand why he's not having a surgery right now . If he do it now , he'll only miss first month of the season , which Lakers can handle it without Kobe .

perhaps the pinkie isn't all that bad?

So the only reason they're making a big deal out of it is to put people off or something?

If he's making an informed decision after consulting numerous specialists, I don't see where any criticism is merited. His shooting in the Olympics was off but the specialists must have told him that with time, he would be fine for next season. If Kobe had any doubt his career would be harmed or his performance next season would suffer without surgery, he wouldn't have made this decision.

It would have been a good excuse to take the first month off and be more fresh for the playoffs.

i don't quite understand why he just didn't have it right after the olympics? 12 weeks from the end of august would put you at thanksgiving, so maybe 10 or 12 games, and it sounds like 12 weeks is on the high end of the recovery period, so it could be fewer missed games.

while he played extremely well in the playoffs, he couldn't hit a 3 to save his life. and then in the olympics he couldn't hit 3's for crap either. now if he plays like he did in the playoffs, where his mid-range jumper was just money and he drove more than normal and took less 3's once he realized he couldn't make any and thus had better efficiency numbers than in the regular season, then i guess it's ok. but if he plays like normal and shoots 20% on 3's, then this will have been a mistake.

unless the injury isnt that serious, but i wouldnt see how it could be. he should have had the sugery it can only get worse as time goes on. I can just see defenders now just trying to go at that hand more than ever now. i dont want to see him in november on the lakers just to see him out in april for the playoffs because the media will again say "the rockets got out of the west since the best player wasnt playing" i want them to beat the lakers at full strength (if they can)

so then the media can just glaze over it like they did in 86 and make it seem the rockets won that series because of one lucky shot at the buzzer

Either he's lying about the injury from jumpstreet or its not as bad as said.

There is no way you can say a torn ligament is "not that bad". There is no other way to fix a torn ligament.

That said, he shot poorly and played poorly in the finals as well as the olympics. His shooting has been awful, so im wondering how things will play out if his bad shooting continues.

Kobe is a trooper. What he did for his country and now to see what he is doing for the Lakers organization by putting his personal health secondary to working out and winning is amazing.

Aside from the Final game, Kobe didn't play that well in the Olympics. Although, I bet the choke job in the Finals is still fresh on his mind and wants to redeem himself.

It's a rather long recovery time for something so minor, especially when:

    A) He played his best ball of the season AFTER he suffered the injury last year

    and

    B) It can't actually get any worse, it's not like his pinkie is going to fall off, it just hurts from time to time...but he's shown he can play through it.

I wouldn't use his olympics as reasoning to get surgery. I know it's kind of unrelated to the actual story, but starting past his little meltdown last summer, Kobe has really stepped up and become the face of NBA basketball, and has proved he deserves the title.

If he hadn't ****ed up in Colorado, he could've taken this mantle years ago.

So do I. In the season there were games where he just couldn't play at times, because of that finger. 12 weeks - it is not very long and he could give up and just decide on having that surgery. It is a new season, Lakers are expected to win it all and you wanna have healthly team and Kobe to make it happen.
