It is somewhat comforting that only one poster (and an obvious looney tune at that) seems to be defending this. Thumbs....?
Many did release their own slaves. They couldn't abolish the ancient embedded institution of slavery, that is unrealistic. Many did work towards that goal however.
But the founding fathers didn't work until there was no more slavery. That is false. She didn't know what she was talking about.
For someone who comes on here ranting about statism and folks being blind to the "realities" of politics, you sure are coming off as the one who can't seem to get out of your own little dogmatic box.
I think we can all tell what she was getting at, that many of the founders fought against slavery and their actions should be acknowledged more (and I agree): And I will acknowledge that she can't deliver a very coherent speech - and she used a very poor choice of words, but I don't think she deserves to be demonized for this.
I agree that many of the founding fathers were against slavery and those that were should be recognized. I can tell what Bachmann was getting at because she said it. She was getting at the idea that the founding fathers ended slavery and that just isn't true. She didn't even know that JQ Adams wasn't a founding father. She should be demonized for supposedly being a civic leader yet not having a middle school level understanding of US history. She's an adult who doesn't need to be coddled.
Basic history lesson. Text from the US Constitution as it was written and ratified, June 21, 1788 [rquoter] Article 1 Section 2(Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.) Article 4 Section 1 (No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, But shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.)[/rquoter] Slavery was written into the Constitution and while controversial the Framers agreed to keep it which is why it is called the Great Compromise. Hardly the actions of a people who fought tirelessly to end the institution.
Sometime I don't know whether to be more embarrassed living in the state that elected Michelle Bachmann three times or from the state that elected Rick Perry four times.
Being from the state that elected Rick Perry multiple times, allowing him to run this state into the ground. Bachmann doesn't come close. She's a joke.
At least Bachmann is only winning a localized Congressional election. The entire state is electing Rick Perry, so I would think Texas wins this one.
