He will opt out. Stars looking for their one last long contract almost always try to negotiate it sooner than later. Player options are injury protection, not necessarily to be used just because you can.

You don't have to get paid more than $28m for the financially correct play still being opting out for less that year but more totals sum.

The bids are just better the sooner you get on the market and the math almost always pays more money over course of the contact, vs taking that last big year from the previous contract and having a declining production year that depressing your value...all for the sake of opting in for marginally more money in that year.

I can agree. Especially for younger players. Melo is getting up there. Not many yrs to recoup the $. At some point teams just won't offer as much. You may be right. Not sure he has 4 or 5 good yrs left.

For the total pay to be more by opting out, he doesn't have to have star player years left, just 4-5. It pays more to negotiate those final yrs sooner, and the better last deal almost always makes up the difference on opting out. It pays more to negotiate sooner while you are still putting up star numbers, so your agent to promote that and say..."Hey, he still has something in the tank, maybe not 4 yrs of star play, but 1 or 2, so if you want those 1 or 2, bidding starts at 4yr contract." That agent position weakens quickly as each year passes, especially if when the star player has his first non-star, down year.

Sometimes if you wait, you don't even get a long contract again. It's like a Gold Digger waiting too long to get divorced from hubby 2 to findi hubby 3 while she can still perform well enough to land a big contact :D

And this doesn't even count injuries in that opt-in year, that can reduce you down to $0 for rest of career.

This is very common practice to opt-out. I feel like I'm reminding the board of something that always happens, yet we forget it does. Maybe that's because in the NFL contracts aren't guaranteed so players opt-in much more. Is that where this confusion comes from? In NBA, contracts for stars are guaranteed like Gold Digger divorce settlements are, so they like to opt out as soon as possible to land the last long contract.

Thank you. Only thing I would add is that trading him in a Ryno situation would put their rebuild in an even worst situation than keeping him financially.
