He only was willing to waive his no trade clause when the fans and the front office made it clear they wanted him gone but I'm completely sure he would prefer to stay in New York

The fans don't want him gone. He was getting we want Melo chants the last game of the season and no the chants were not followed by "to leave"
I would say the smart fans do want him gone cause they are just ready to rebuild... maybe some of the ones paying for season tickets are satisfied with winning 30 games. Idk I can't say I know their fan base well but i don't see why they want to continue down that path.
