I think most rational people acknowledge the basics of your argument. Those of us in favor of gun control acknowledge the basics of the killers will be killers argument. If you don't allow them to get a gun you make it harder on them. A knife can kill yes, but it only kills one at a time and as a potential victim I stand a better chance of surviving. When the terrorists used box cutters on the planes they banned box cutters. When Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer they regulated fertilizer. Your analogy to vehicles is a logical fallacy. We regulate not only the vehicles people can use on the road, but who can use them, and under what circumstances. No one measure will eliminate all murders, but we can make it more difficult to murder just as regulating vehicles, box cutters, or fertilizer will eliminate car deaths or terrorism. It makes it less likely. It's one of the arguments of the anti gun control that irks me. "It won't eliminate murders." Well duh. What it will do is make murder more difficult. It also doesn't preclude you from considering other remedies like some tweaks in the way we deal with mental health. Perfect is a ridiculous goal. Our goal should be better.
