Looks like Hakeem was either late getting there, or really miss-timed his jump. Oh well, it happens to everybody.
snowmt01 and m_cable, That dunk surprised Hakeem, everyone else in the arena, and everyone in TV land! That was a nasty dunk, period! There really wasn't an excuse... KJ went up soooo fast and strong that he kept going up and up and up! It was just a damn good dunk! It was a great dunk over a great player. When I saw it live, I even said, "Damn!" "That was nasty!" I mean, we're talking about a 6'1", 180lb guard dunking over the best shot blocker in NBA history (since the stat was kept).
game 1 at Hou. game 2 at Hou game 3 at Pho game 4 at Pho game 5 at Hou game 6 at Pho game 7 at Hou It wasn't game 5
Correct me If I'm wrong....I'll have to bust out the game tape for this...but I think that dunk happned on Game 7 1995 in Phoenix.
Game 4 of First Title run. It was late in the game when then outcome of the game was pretty much decided with Houston coming out on top. Rockets were couple minutes away from evening up the series at 2-2 after going down 0-2 to the Suns and losing homecourt. Entire suns arena was shocked and dismayed but they got something to cheer for with the KJ dunk. What I found amusing was that, even though the suns had lost the game and had choked up the 0-2 lead, they were celebrating the KJ dunk (including KJ himself) as if they had just won the championship. It was a great dunk but Hakeem went up half-heartedly to dunk it. Rockets and Hakeem were already in celebration mode, and hi-fiving each other on accomplishing something no one thought they would. BTW, if anyone has the video of this game, they can see Hakeem looking for and walking up towards KJ to congratulate him on the dunk, once the game was over.
Yep....you got it. Yeah, I remember right after he made the dunk he was hollering out loud to the crowd at mid-court; trying to pump up his team and fans. It was kind of irritating at the time.
I take pride in knowing Hakeem/Rockets stuff. Always have followed the Rockets even though I am from NY and have never been to Houston. Best part was when Rockets beat the Knicks in the Finals and I was the only guy in a roomfull of Knicks fans, running around hysterically shouting, "Yeahhhhh Rockets. Hakeem owns Ewing!!" Now that I look back at it, I am surprised no one kicked my @ss right then. Anyways, last year I converted my girlfriend into a Rockets fan too (her favourite team is the Kings though), and we are planning to fly over to houston for a week in December to attend some Rockets games in Toyota center. Finally!!! After following the Rockets for so many years!! I am envious of you guys being able to catch the Rockets at Toyota center almost anytime.
KJ should have been called for the offensive foul with the push off with left arm......but still a nasty dunk...lol Game tape??? Does someone have gametape?? Man I would trade currency for copies of those.....
A few people remember even a sweeter block by dream, when he did the same exact thing to John Stockton in the regular season. What made it nocer, other than the fact that it was stockton, was the fact that stockton never saw Dream. he kept looking around to see who semt shot to the fifth row.
Damn the Phoenix Suns! They know how to choose PG. Kevin Johnson, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and who else?
The best game ever (symbolically), IMO, is game 3, 1994, in Phoenix. If you can find that game, buy it. That's the game that started it all. Up until that time we were considered dead (0-2). No championships for the city of Houston since the AFL (60,61). Everyone was thinking, "Here we go again, choking again!" In that game, the Rockets came out sluggish...ho hum.... I was watching that game while on AOL, on the phone, writing bills, etc....halfheartedly looking, now and then checking the score....Then, all of a sudden in the 3rd....they started to catch up (that's when I started the VCR). The rest is history! Mad Max had the game of his life!
KJ - dunk on Hakeem....gained some fame and he was an ok PG. Hakeem "The Dream' Olajuwon - 2 NBA Championships and named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players Enuff sed.
I'm pretty sure that come from behind block by the Dream was in the playoffs. Im 95% positive. Anyone remember differently.
