I have never really like cats (except for maybe 2 or 3) and am highly allergic but I got pretty buzzed on St. Patties day and kind of tried bringing home a stray emaciated cat on the way home. I felt so bad for the thing. I was going to feed him and take him to the vet. The cat was in pretty terrible shape. I sat down on the sidewalk and he walked over and sat in my lap and let me pet him. Then out of nowhere that little b*stard bit me on the hand. I freaked out thinking I had rabies so I got up and gave him the finger and walked home. **** cats
True story here... I'm not much of a pet person but have grown to like dogs more then cats and have own a couple of dogs in my life time. Never considered cats as good pets and thinks they're stupid and they're just "meh". Years later I went out with this girl who is a pet lover who owns two Yorkshere terrier and one tabby cat named Morris. Little did I know about cats until I met him. He was the most affectionate, loving little creature I've met. Yes he will meow when he's hungry, and even when he's not, he would usually come sit on my lab to chill. He will play sparingly and he's just so easy to be around not having to take him to the bathroom and he doesn't need my attention all the time. I like him more then the other two dogs, honestly. The constant barking when they see every little things that moves and they tend to be a little hyper gets to my nerve a bit. I now have my own black male cat named Sam who I can't see myself living without. Was given to me as a birthday gift from the same girl above who got him from a foster parent at 2 years old. He is now 12 years old and going strong to my surprise. Ain't cat life is like 9-10 years? Here's the thing about cats, you will need to earned their trust initially. Its a good feeling once he does shows you affection and love for the first time. I now have a wife and 2 young kids and he doesn't show them the same kind of affection as he showed me. He's around me a lot more and when he sees me on my phone with someone, he tries to intervene. I'm not sure if all cats are like this, but three things I find pretty amazing about my cat. 1. He never once had an accident outside his litter box in his 12 years so far. Maybe a few spec of pee on my kictchen floor, and that's becuase he had a UTI and needed medical attention. 2. People likes him including cat haters, because when they see him for the first time, he lets them pet him while he purrs. No annoying whining or being hyperactive. 3. He's not a outdoor cat but when I do let him go outside to play on a sunny day, he always finds his way home. Seriously, how does cats have such a good sense of direction? Most annoying thing about him or cats in general? Sometimes he plays a little too rough and he doesn't realized how sharp his teeth are. He playfully bites only me, and know better not to do that to anyone else. He doesn't scratch human, but do likes to scratch fabric/cloth which my wife hates. A sctaching post minimized this problem. He whines at night around 10-11. Thats one of the time period he likes to play, while everyelse is sleeping. Constant hairball and shedding that can cause allergies to my wife and kids. Luckily they're immune to it now. Tried to comb him as much as I can...doesn't always help. Well, that's basically my story about cats.
I think that's a great story about your cat. My experience with having cats (I have dogs, too) is that cats react based on experience. If they're around people, played with, given attention when they're kittens, then they are social and friendly. If they're not, they don't learn to be social like that. To answer the question, cat lifespans are typically more than 10 years. My last one that I had a long time lived to 16. I've known others that lived similar lengths of time. So he might have several years left, yet.
My S/O has a cat and I can relate to everything you said. I have never been a fan of cats until we moved in together. Ours is an entirely indoor cat. I did make a mistake of letting him go out and play once. He is so smart that when he hears my S/O or I lock our car doors, he recognizes the sound and comes running downstairs and waits right outside the entrance door so he can run out. If it some other neighbor, he wouldn't bother Cats are easy maintenance. When we go on 2-3 or even 4 day trips, we just leave sufficient food and water and he will be fine. The only incident we have are the occasional small amounts of puke due to hairball when he cleans himself. And he does get jealous occasionally when my S/O and I are engaging in the naughty. Oh and this cat knows clearly when we go to bed. He jumps up on the night stand waiting for his treats. That's a daily routine.
Yes. They're pretty sneaky because its their nature to be on the alert in that manner. He would jump on the window ledges as soon as he hears me parked my car to try and make a run for it as I open the house door. You made a great point about maintenance/cleanliness. Part of the reason for their hairball issues is their constant licking and cleaning themselves. I was surprised on how clean they can get without washing them for a long period of time. I can sniff their fur up close and not have a trace of bad odor! lol There's a misconception that cat's don't respond to their name calling. Not sure if that's how most cats are, but my cat respond to his name calling pretty consistently. There are times where he just ignores you when he's tired or too lazy.
Not yet. Only threats so far. But she constantly begs for food when I'm already borderline over feeding. And I put food in the tank, half the time she doesn't even turn around to get it, just keeps thrashing around at me so fervently she doesn't even notice. Super annoying. Destroys anything I put in the aquarium, including the aquarium itself- she actually rips the silicon sealant out of the seams. If I didn't have to upgrade aquariums so often for how fast she grows, I would probably have leaks by now. I can't keep plants or fish in there. I tried a plant that they aren't supposed eat, and she didn't eat it, but still completely destroyed it anyway. Same with fish. Eats a couple, then kills and shreds the rest for no reason. Horrifying. And the worst, she is an escape artist & is becoming increasingly aggressive. Anything less than a 2' tall fence around the tank and she climbs out. Water changes are tense now, because I have to have the lid ready the moment the water line gets to the top. One time I wasn't, and of course she immediately starts climbing out. I pushed my hand at her to kind of direct her back in, and she opened her mouth at me and made some kind of turtle noise. That was kind of scary. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure she is a racist too. Loves the white cat, anytime the white cat gets anywhere near the tank, she's follows her every move from the inside, meets her through the grating at the top, sits still on the rocks making these weird poses in front of her I only see her do with that cat... Zero interest in the black cat. None of that stuff, like he's invisible. I won't hold the fact that she's a female against her, although that does mean she's going to get bigger, and I'll eventually have to build a place for her to lay eggs.
